Steffen

In Loving Memory

Steffen, Jean Catherine (nee: Matthews)

passed away on September 30, 2021 at age 93 and into the loving embrace of Jesus Christ. Jean was born on October 31, 1927. She is survived by her husband, Francis G. Steffen, of 66 years. She is the mother of Robert Steffen (Laura); George Steffen, deceased (Paula Pavel); Barbara Carmedelle (Paul); and Ann Steffen (George Gerules). Jean is grandmother to seven: Dan, Eric, Chris, Andrew, Cara, Teresa and Julia; and great grandmother to Margaret. She was one of seven children of Edward and Agnes Matthews, and loved and was beloved by her siblings, nieces and nephews. Jean loved and practiced her Catholic faith with conviction after joining the church as an adult. She often could be found volunteering at Seven Holy Founders Catholic Church and School and many charities in the St. Louis area including Meals on Wheels and homeless shelters. She used her knitting and crochet talents to provide afghans, sweaters, and stocking caps for her family and the homeless. She is an Associate of the Ursuline Sisters in Kentucky, part of their support team and prayer warriors. Her enthusiasm for St. Louis professional sports teams was unrivaled as she was once a ticket holder, rarely missed a game on television and reveled in the many championships achieved. Jean was a longtime supporter of opera, symphony and theatrical companies, The St. Louis Zoo, The Missouri Botanical Gardens and other local institutions. She loved music, cooking, travel, fishing, boating, hiking, gardening and her more than 50 rose bushes. Faith and family always came first for Jean. She leaves behind a legacy of how to live an inspired, successful life, being a servant of God in her daily activities. Her family and friends will miss her greatly, though we know she is in Heaven and is encouraging us to be the best we can be until we meet again. Suggested memorial gifts to: St. Vincent’s Community Outreach (vco-stl.org), Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph (ursulinesmsj.org), or St. Louis Symphony Orchestra (slso.org).  Visitation will be from 9:00-10:00am on Monday, October 18th at Seven Holy Founders Church, 6741 Rock Hill Road, Affton MO 63123, followed by a Mass of the Resurrection at 10am.  Per church guidelines, masks will be required for all in attendance. Burial will be immediately following at Resurrection Cemetery.
