Deters, Arleen

Deters, Arleen born October 29, 1927 in St. Louis Missouri, daughter of Eugene and Lydia (Bergman) Kiesler, granddaughter of Lydia (Strauss) and Otto Bergmann.  Arleen’s parents divorced when she was 2 and she was raised by her mother’s only sibling, Ruth, and her husband, Otto Gauer, as their daughter.  She met her brother, Gene Kiesler in 2009.

Arleen graduated from Woodward School K-8 in in 81/2 years.  She graduated from Cleveland High in 1945.  During high school, she volunteered at Deaconess and Deloges Hospitals.  She was on WIL radio (St. Louis University) every Saturday morning signing solo or in a trio and in amateur dramatic productions.  She graduated cum laude in 3 1/2 years from Maryville College (now University) in 1948 with a degree in Speech and Drama.

In 1949, she married the love of her life and best friend, Lee (Leap) Deters. She taught at St. Joan of Arc for 3 years and at in Webster Groves for 1 year before becoming the 2nd Personnel Director of Lay Teachers for the Archdiocese of St. Louis, working at the Chancery under Msgr. James Hoflich, Superintendent of Elementary Schools for three years before the birth of her daughter, Sheila in 1959.

Arleen was predeceased by her grandparents, parents and, in 2007, by her husband of 58 years Leap.  She is survived by her daughter, Sheila (Daryl), son, Jerry (Paula) and precious grandchildren, Emily, Judd (Caitlin), Will and Luke, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, “kissing cousins,” and dear friends Pat Slade, Dee and Don Schicker.  Donations to the American Parkinson’s Disease Assoc. or to the charity of your choice.

Services: Visitation at Kutis South County Chapel, 5255 Lemay Ferry Rd, on Friday, June 3, from 5-8 p.m., Funeral Mass Saturday June 4, 10 a.m. at St Raphael the Archangel. Interment Resurrection Cemetery.
