Gene was proud to serve in the United States Army for three years and the Vietnam War in 1969. He was a long time employee of Great Lakes Carbon and Carondelet Coke Corporation as an air pollution control supervisor.

He loved classic cars and tractors. He enjoyed birdwatching, keeping squirrels away from the bird feeders, going to breakfast/lunch with his brother and buddies,  his pets and current cat, Bobbycat. He always made time to be with his grandchildren- taking them to the park, fishing, swimming, watching SpongeBob, going to Burger King and eating his favorite donuts.
