Beloved husband of Mary Nolan (nee Thackrey); dear father of Elizabeth (Deborah Purvis) Nolan, William J. “Bill” (Elizabeth “Libby”) Nolan III and Bridget (Jason) Rumler; dear grandfather of Jacqulyn (Amie Needham), Kaitlyn, Zackariah, William IV, Allyson, Grace, Landyn and Eleanor; dear great-grandfather of Brantley and Elliott; dear brother of Patricia (Jerry) Schmidt, Tim (Ann) and Tom (Linda) Nolan; our dear brother-in-law, uncle, great-uncle, cousin and friend to all.
Bill Nolan, a prominent St. Louis businessman, having owned and operated Nolan Office Interiors for over 35 years. His government experience and service included most recently Mayor of the City of Sunset Hills between 2010 and 2014. The most active part of his term came shortly after being sworn in during the “New Year Eve’s Tornado” in 2010. Reacting to a citizen’s suggestion, he organized efforts and collected a quarter of a million dollars to assist citizens in recovering the loss of their belongings and personal property.
As well, he served as Alderman from April 2009 until elected mayor, and previously former vice-chair of the Sunset Hills Revenue Study Committee in 1973 and Chair of “The Say Yes for Sunset Hills” campaign in 1974. More recently he was elected to the Board of the St. Louis County Municipal League in June 2012 by Mayors of other Cities in St. Louis County.
His community service includes SSM St. Clare Hospital Community Advisory Committee; Founder and Board Member of The Foundation for Sunset Hills; Board of Directors of the Down Syndrome Association of Greater St. Louis; President, Peaceful Valley Property Owners Association, Owensville, MO; Member, Gasconade County Court House Study, Hermann, MO; former Trustee, St. Louis Hills and St. Louis Hills Estates in City of St. Louis; and Board Member of St. Louis Hills Home Owners Association, St. Louis, MO.
Bill is a Past President, St. Louis Chapter, Administrator Management Society; Area Director, Administrative Management Society; Board Member, AMS International, Philadelphia, PA; Board Member and Past President, Metro St. Louis Business Associations, Inc.; Founding Member and Vice President, Small Business Coalition; and Past President, Brentwood Chamber of Commerce.
His professional portfolio includes a registered Interior Designer, State of Illinois and Missouri; Professional Member, International Code Council (ICC); Professional Member, American Society of Interior Designers; Past President Missouri Coalition for Interior Design; Chairman, Interior Design Council; Board of Professional Registration, State of MO (Appointed by Governor); Member Advisory Board, Dept. of Environment Design, College of Human Environmental Sciences, U of MO, Columbia; Chairman, School of Architectural Studies Advisory Board, U of MO, Columbia; Distinguished Service Award, College of Human Environmental Sciences, U of MO, Columbia (he was the second ever to have received this award when presented); Adjunct Faculty, College of Human Environmental Design, U of MO, Columbia; Vanguard Member, College of Human Environmental Sciences, U of MO; Jefferson Club Member, U of MO; N.C.I.D.Q. One of his most rewarding nominations was that of U.S. Council for the Country of Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, the final paperwork was held up by the U.S. State Dept. and his passing preceded it’s approval.
