Aldy, Barbara Jean “Bobbie”

Bobbie Aldy was full of love and was not afraid to share it. Barbara Jean Aldy (nee Shanks) passed away Aug. 19, 2026 at the age of 85. She was the loving wife of Harold, who passed away in 2011, for 48 years. She is survived by her daughters Midge (Jerry) Winkler and Laurie (Jeff) Kuchno, son Jeff (Georgeanna), sister Pat (Zig) Miller and brother Ron (Marsha) Shanks. She was the loving grandma to Kevin, Bryan (Ally) and Kristin. Born March 3, 1941, Bobbie grew up in Lemay near South St. Louis City and described herself as a very quiet kid. She had excellent math skills and worked as an accountant for the government shortly after graduating from Notre Dame High School in 1958.
It was in that job that she met the love of her life Harold, whom she first spoke to on the phone regarding a payroll issue, which he did for the US military. After a cheeky conversation, he decided he was going to meet her in person. Once he came to the office, Bobbie’s best friend at work, Mercedes, invited him to the work Christmas party — and the rest was history.
She was a second mom to many and was known as “Grandma Bobbie” to dozens more than just her grandkids. She was always welcoming and happy to see a full house of people, and was just as caring and generous with animals, taking in many strays over the years — which Harold accepted, of course. While shy in her childhood years, Bobbie was rarely quiet as an adult, always chatting and laughing with someone — a friend, a neighbor, and oftentimes a stranger at the grocery store or church. She was famous for her Grandma Bobbie Chocolate Chip Cookies, never refusing a request to bake a few batches for a social event. She never missed one of the likely thousands of sporting events and school programs (choir concerts, plays, etc.) for her kids and grandkids. She was a dedicated, meticulous softball scorebookkeeper, drawing on her decades of experience as an accountant and always ready to stand up if the other team’s coach or the umpire was questioning something — she had it right there on the page.
She was never mean to a soul, but always ready to stand up for what she believed in. Bobbie spent nearly 25 years volunteering multiple times a week at the Rogers Elementary School library, starting when Kevin was in kindergarten and never stopping. In 2023, after an estimated 15,000 hours of volunteering, the Mehlville School District Board of Education voted to name the school library The Rogers Elementary School Bobbie Aldy Library, an ode to her dedication and care to education and to the students.
She changed more lives than she could ever know, and we are all better for having known her.

Services: Visitation is August 26 from 4 to 7 p.m. at KUTIS FUNERAL HOME, 5255 Lemay Ferry Rd. Funeral mass will be celebrated August 27 at 9:45 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Oakville. Burial will follow at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Mitchell and Friends Foundation.
