Appelbaum

In Loving Memory

Appelbaum, Elizabeth “Betty”

September 19, 1935 - May 29, 2025

Elizabeth Ann (Betty) Appelbaum

Betty Appelbaum, 89, nee Elizabeth Ann Coan, of St. Louis, Missouri, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2025, surrounded by family. She was born on September 19, 1935, in St. Louis, Missouri. Betty will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who knew her.

Betty is survived by five of her six children, Karen (Scott) Seaborn, Glenn (Karen) Appelbaum, Jr., Mary (Jeff) Hamilton, John (Carol) Appelbaum, Theresa “Teri” Appelbaum (Paul Viano); fifteen grandchildren, and dozens of great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; her sister, Patricia Reifschneider (Honny), brother-in-law Larry Appelbaum, sisters-in-law, Bernie Appelbaum and Cathy Appelbaum, many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. Her husband of 50 years, Glenn Appelbaum, and son, Martin Appelbaum predeceased her.

From star student at St. Francis de Sales Grade School and High School, to Prom Queen, to young bride and mother, careers as a legal secretary and successful business owner of Mail Boxes, Etc., Betty’s life was extraordinary. She was beautiful inside and out—brilliant, witty, strong, committed, fiercely independent, and full of life, laughter and love!

Betty prided herself on graduating from the school of hard knocks. And there is no doubt that she obtained this degree with honors.

Betty was a loyal and faithful servant of God. She drew her strength from God and the Catholic community. She was active in every parish in which she lived, St. Francis de Sales, St. Thomas the Apostle, St. Mark, St. Gabriel the Archangel, and St. Peter.

Betty was most proud of the family she and her beloved husband, Glenn created through a fifty-year bond of love no one could deny.  She married Jerry Meier later in life and they enjoyed ten years together.

She was a loving mother to her six children and their spouses, and she adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who lovingly called her Meemaw.

Betty brought love, life and laughter to all who knew her.

The funeral Mass will take place on Monday, June 2, at 11:30 AM at St. Peter Catholic Church in Kirkwood, Mo. 243 West Argonne Drive, Kirkwood.

Visitation will be held Monday, June 2, 9:00 – 11:15 AM at St. Peter Catholic Church, Kirkwood, Mo, 243 West Argonne Drive, Kirkwood. She will be laid to rest with her beloved Glenn at St. Peter Cemetery on Geyer Road in Kirkwood.

In memory of Betty, contributions can be made to St. Patrick’s Center, located in St. Louis, MO, a charity that was always close to her heart.

  1. My thoughts and prayers go out to Betty’s loved ones at this time. May God bless them with the joy of fond memories. As a former classmate, I have a few giggles, especially as I recall planning the Class Reunions. May she be granted Eternal
    Peace.

  2. All the Appelbaums were blessed to have Aunt Betty in our lives. During every visit when we were growing up, she made us feel at home from cooking great meals to overnight stays, she showed us love. As we grew up, Aunt Betty continued to show that love by being welcoming to our spouses while always making time to get caught up with our lives. Thank you Aunt Betty for being a wonderful and positive person to us all. We will always remember your big, beautiful smile!

  4. My heart lives with everyone’s heart that loved Aunt Betty. I had the joy of being “summer child # 7 ” with Aunt Betty and Uncle Glenn in 1980. That summer gave me two enormous life gifts::: Immersion in the St Louis Jesuits music ( compliments of Aunt Betty and the St Gabriel Choir) and a wonderful man named Ken Ludwig. Both things changed my life forever. They both still hold me together deep in my core despite Ken , my dear beloved, being with Aunt Betty, Uncle Glenn and many others already across the veil. Aunt Betty didn’t just change worlds, she helped others create their own. She was instrumental in opening the door God gave me to find Ken and love . My world here would wish them both back. But love tells me to be deeply grateful for every moment Ken and Aunt Betty made me a better Josephine. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

  5. My prayers go out to Betty and her family. Betty and I grew up
from childhood ,lived on the same street and went to school from kindergarten to high school. We had many laughs together, were in the band in high school and had many sleepovers at my moms house (Karsch) and went to a lot of German Dances. Love you Betty, what a wonderful life you had.
