Cathers

In Loving Memory

Cathers, Sylvia

Cathers, Sylvia passed into Glory and was received into the arms of Jesus on January 28th, 2021 at the age of 90, surrounded by family at St. Luke’s Hospital. She suffered from an enlarged heart and congestive heart failure in recent years, but through the support of her family was able to remain living at home until the end. Her devout faith in God brought her comfort throughout her many trials. Sylvia trusted Jesus as her Lord and Savior and she attended church regularly throughout her life. She truly enjoyed her Senior Ladies Bible Study and through it made many lifelong and supportive friendships.

She was born in the City of St. Louis to Treffie and Ida Mae Turnbough on May 26th, 1930. Growing up towards the end of the Great Depression with her 12 other siblings was not always easy, but she perservered. She married Edgar Eugene “Gene” Cathers Sr., at 17 and together they had 4 children; Jeannie, who preceded her in death, Edgar, Jr. (Linda), Loretta (Britt) and Chuck (Beth).

Sylvia became a widow at the age of 48 and remained independent the rest of her life. She maintained many rental homes and at one point even a small apartment building. At the age of 70, she built the home she lived in and frequently used it to host family gatherings and parties.

Sylvia had a very close relationship with her children as her 7 grandchildren who affectionately called her Grandma and Ma!Ma!. She often enjoyed their company during her morning tea time, while watching the news, gardening, or just keeping up on their lives. She also enjoyed her 8 great-grandchildren who she loved spending time with.

Services: A funeral service is scheduled for 11:00 am on Friday, February 5, at Kutis South County Chapel, 5255 Lemay Ferry Road.  Masks required and social distancing encouraged. Visitation Thursday, February 4, from 5:00 to 8:00 P. M. at Kutis South County Chapel. Contributions appreciated to the Missouri Baptist Disaster Relief, Salvation Army, Feed my People and Canaan Baptist Church.

Service will be available virtually through KUTIS FUNERAL HOME Facebook Live.

  19. So sorry to hear of your loss. I felt I knew Sylvia since I had worked with Chuck for so long and heard the many loving conversations. Losing a parent is a very difficult part of our life, hold all of your memories close to your heart and know that both of your parents have been reunited and will be watching over you.
May the Peace of the Lord be with you all.

  27. My deepest thoughts and prayers are with you all, Edgar, Loretta, and Chuck and families. Aunt Silvia was my”Little bitty aunt. ” As I so fondly called her. She will be missed by all. But we have comfort in knowing that she was close to Jesus. And we know we will meet again some day! She was such a inspiration to all. I’m sorry I couldn’t make the viewing as I’ve been sick. But my heart is breaking with your heart. May God help you and encourage you as you go through this hard time.
