Laura Cranor 22

In Loving Memory

Cranor, Laura

April 20, 1925 - April 27, 2025

In her own words (with notations by her son)

I (Laura Doss) was born in a rented house in Freistatt, Missouri, on April 20, 1925.  I was the youngest of eight children.  My family was poor but we always had enough to eat.

My dad, who was a blacksmith, bought me a pair of shoes once a year.  My clothes were hand-me-downs from my sisters.  I went to church every Sunday and attended a Lutheran school for eight years.

After my confirmation I graduated from the eighth grade.  Then I had to go to work doing housework – I was 13 years old.  My salary was 3 dollars a week plus room and board.  After 3 years I went to St. Louis.  All my belongings fit into one suitcase.  I did housework for 5 years.  My salary was 45 dollars a month.

In 1947 I got married (to Paul Bachmann) and moved to New Haven, Michigan.  I had my son Don in 1948.  I taught school there for 6 years, grades 1 thru 3.  I lived in Michigan for 9 years and then moved back to St.  Louis, Missouri.  My daughter, Mary, was born there in 1957.  After Mary was in school, I enrolled in Midwest Medical school to become a medical assistant.  I worked (as office manager) for two internists, heart specialists, for 33 years.

In 1969 I became a widow for 9 years.  In 1976 I met the one and only love of my life (Walter Cranor).  He died in 2016.  The 40 years with Walt were the best loving and special years of my life.

Don, Mary (died 2007), Sue (daughter-in-law), Jonathan (grandson) and Owen (great grandson) are also included in the love of my life.

***

Don and Sue Bachmann would like to thank Bristol Hospice and the staff at Evertrue Laclede Groves Care Center for the love and exceptional care they provided Laura.

Laura’s favorite hymn: “I am but a stranger here.  Heaven is my home.”

SERVICES:  Private burial services were held at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, contributions to the American Cancer Society appreciated.
