Dear sister of Leslie Decker, Jen Krumrey (Christina Bross) and Beth Bollinger. Dear daughter-in-law of Geraldine H. and the late Don Gauvain. Our dear sister-in-law, niece, aunt, cousin, friend to many, and caregiver to all.
Services: Memorial visitation at Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque Catholic Church Saturday, April 2, from 9AM until Mass at 12PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Friends of Kids with Cancer appreciated. Served by KUTIS SOUTH COUNTY Chapel.
My heart breaks for the Guavains and for Karen’s mom and sisters. Remembering when Karen helped me find a proper intervention for a complicated patient. Remembering when Andrew was injured and Karen responded immediately to my call for help. Remembering Dave and Karen…a team for our teens. Remembering Karen and Dave providing a safe place when it was so needed. I wasn’t even one of her many closest friends and she did these things for me. Her children will carry on with the love she imparted to them.

She worked tirelessly to find just the right treatment for Lydia, she would call after hours to tell us good news and you could tell she was so excited to see her patient getting better! She was so caring and it showed during every appointment we had. She saved and cared for so many children. She will be greatly missed.

Our sincere condolences to her family. Such a tragic loss for her family, the childhood cancer community and all those that knew her. She truly cared for her patients. She was our grandson’s doctor and we lost him to this terrible disease 9 years ago. She made the 2 hour trip to attend his funeral. What a beautiful soul! Sending many prayers!

Dr. Gauvain was incredibly kind to our family after our daughter’s diagnosis. She always took time to talk with us in a way we could understand… I give credit to her and all the hoepital staff for helping our child recover. I marveled at how she seemed to know everyone in St. Louis. There was, seemingly, always someone she knew who was in a state of crisis and Karen was always in the thick of things trying to help or console or advise. Karen and I were classmates at SLU medical school. We were both a little “older” than the other students, having had prior careers, and we bonded over that. But Karen was also a wife and a mother. I marveled at how she juggled medical school and residency with a young family. But it wasn’t until I had a family of my own that I truly appreciated how hard it must have been. I will always remember Karen as one of the hardest workers, with the biggest heart and and an even bigger smile. And while she was always striving to excel in classes or clinical rotations, she was always eager to get back to Dave and the kids. I know that Dave was the rock star behind the scenes that made it possible for her to realize her professional dreams, and the glue that kept it all together. She was so proud of your beautiful family and the three incredible young adults you raised together. May you all find peace in the knowledge of all the good she did in this world and the limitless love she had for you all.
