John Godfrey

In Loving Memory

Godfrey, John Joseph

December 22, 1940 - October 22, 2026

John Joseph Godfrey passed peacefully on October 22 in St. Louis, Missouri, at the age of 85, surrounded by his loving family.
John was preceded in death by his parents, George and Grace Godfrey; his brother, Tom Godfrey; and his sister, Joan Auer. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Mary (Richardson) Godfrey; their seven children, Carolyn Christiansen, Christine Kersting (Bill Kersting), Eileen Dalhoff (Terry Dalhoff), John Godfrey Jr., Barbara King (Randy King), Timothy Godfrey, and Megan Williams (Erik Williams); nine grandchildren, Gabrielle, Jimi, Rose, Mackenzie, Kristen, Kelsey, Madeline, William, and Allison; and five great-grandchildren, Athena, Juniper, Alexander, Zackariah, and Eden.

Born on December 22, 1940, in St. Louis, John was the youngest of three children. He graduated from Laboure High School, where he met Mary, the love of his life. They married on February 11, 1961, beginning a partnership that would span 65 years and grow into a beautiful family of nine. Together, they raised their seven children in their first home in St. Ann, Missouri, building a life centered on family, faith, and love.

John spent his life working hard and serving others. He was devoted to providing for his family, serving his church community, and caring for his parents and extended family. Known for his servant’s heart, deep faith, boundless energy, and wonderful sense of fun and humor, John had a gift for making others feel cared for and bringing joy to those around him. He also had a well-known appreciation for coffee and chocolate.

As the father of seven, John was never far from the action. He was a coach, Boy Scout leader, chauffeur, and teacher of life’s important lessons. He shared his time generously, helping his children learn, grow, and navigate the world.

Even in semi-retirement, John’s calling to serve others continued. As a driver for Friendship Village, he found a special purpose in caring for residents in long-term care. At age 77, he received the VOYCE Caregivers Award, recognizing him as an “exceptional caregiver who gave of himself and made a difference in the lives of those in long-term care.” John was beloved by residents for the time and attention he gave them, especially when they were frightened, feeling poorly, or simply needed someone to brighten their day. His compassion was a reflection of the way he lived his entire life: showing up for others, offering comfort, and making a difference through simple acts of kindness.

John’s legacy is one of faith, family, service, laughter, and love. He will be remembered not only for all he did for those around him, but for the joy, warmth, and care he brought into their lives. He leaves behind a family who will carry his lessons and his love forward for generations.

Services: Visitation will be held on Friday, November 6, from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. at Kutis Funeral Home, 5255 Lemay Ferry Road, St. Louis, Missouri.

A Memorial Mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. at Assumption Catholic Church, 4725 Mattis Road, St. Louis, Missouri, followed immediately by graveside prayer at Assumption Parish Cemetery.
