Jonathon Edward (“Edd”) Hahler, age 96 passed away peacefully to the arms of His Savior, on October 26, 2025 at Friendship Village, in St. Louis County, Missouri.
Born to the Reverend John and Margaret (nee Werderich) Hahler on October 18, 1929, in Muncie, Indiana during the tough times of the Great Depression, Jonathon’s family moved frequently in search of job opportunities for his father, eventually settling in St. Louis where Jonathon attended McKinley High School. He was later drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War and served honorably as a supply sergeant stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Jonathon shared a long and loving marriage with his late wife of 66 years, Helen (nee Saunchegrow). Together they built a life and raised a family of four children over three decades in University City, Missouri, where he was a member of the Lion’s Club, a volunteer fireman, was an assistant coach for his son’s baseball team, helped organize Girl Scout cookie drives and bowled on a Tuesday night bowling league. They retired to Lake Timberline, outside of Bonne Terre, Missouri, where they spent the last two decades together. Here they found peace and happiness until Helen’s death in 2020.
Jonathon held many jobs in his 96 years. His colorful tales about the time he worked on a barge on the Mississippi river and his 36 years at the St. Louis County Water Company kept his family entertained and fascinated at how times have changed. His retelling the stories of his antics as the youngest child of a Preacher and how he tried his parent’s patience on more than one occasion were especially entertaining!
Jonathon is survived by his four children: Gary Hahler (Sharon), Nancy Hoeing (John), Jeffrey Hahler (Tina), and Vicki Ecker (Jeff). He was a proud grandfather of Matthew Hoeing (Clementine), Andrew Hoeing (Stefani), Kyle Hahler, Sara Blazek (Daniel), Joshua Hahler (Gabrielle), Katy Humphries (Jake) and Chevy Hahler. His happiest moments were in the company of his great-grandchildren: Madison, Makenna, Autumn, Allison, Savannah, Graham, Vivienne, Esther, Luke, Timothy and Oakley.
Jonathon is also survived by one sister-in-law, Armida Hahler and one brother-in-law, David Hassler, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who affectionately called him Uncle Edd or Uncle Eddy. His final day of reminiscing included the retelling of memories he had of holidays and happy times surrounded by family in south St. Louis.
Jonathon was preceded in death by his wife Helen, parents John and Margaret Hahler, his brother John Hahler, Jr., sisters Dorothy Murphy (Bill), Ruth Tatum (Ed), and many cherished in-laws including Fred & Dimples Saunchegrow, Virginia & Art Goede, Vernon & Betty Saunchegrow, Don & Nell Saunchegrow, Gloria & Fred Binder, Jean & Jerry Ussrey, Carol & Maureen Saunchegrow, Janet Hassler, Donna & Larry Taylor; nephews Art & Vernon Goede, Clifford Saunchegrow, Mike Hassler; and nieces Barbara Murphy, LuAnn Eckert and Beverly Laminger.
Jonathon was a member of the Wellston Masonic Lodge, and the McKinley Goldbugs alumni group.
