Michael Lee Hines of Affton, Missouri, passed away on September 23, 2026. Born and raised in Lemay, Michael spent his career with Laclede Gas Company.
Exceptionally intelligent and endlessly curious, Michael was an avid reader who loved the New York Times crossword, challenging himself to beat the record, and rarely missed Jeopardy! at 4:30 each day. A lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan, he cherished memories of Cardinals spring training trips to Florida with dear friends. In his younger years, Michael enjoyed boxing and loved wrenching on motorcycles and cars—a passion that stayed with him throughout his life. He also enjoyed fishing, shooting pool, and good craft beer made even better by the friends he shared it with.
Music was a lifelong love, and Michael was rarely far from his harmonica. He played guitar, loved to sing, and could pick up just about any instrument and make music with it (except the bagpipes!) He especially treasured visits with his grandsons in Wyoming, exploring the mountains and making memories together.
Michael will be remembered most for his quick wit, remarkable mind, genuine kindness, and love of making people smile and laugh. Supportive and encouraging by nature, he brought humor, curiosity, and color to the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Michael is survived by his wife, Patricia (Krull) Hines; daughters Terri Fritsche and Stephanie (Hines) Hernandez; son-in-law Jacob Hernandez; and grandsons Michael J. Hines, Matthew Hernandez, Joey Hernandez, and Jacob Hernandez Jr.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Michael’s memory may make a donation to Ready Readers, the Central Institute for the Deaf, or the American Cancer Society.
