Rosemary S. Hiss, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, friend and teacher of many passed away peacefully on Saturday evening, September 26, 2026, surrounded by her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William H., and Eleanor Hinde Smith, a brother, James, and her son, James Michael Tucker. She is survived by her husband, Edwin Hiss, three children, Molly Tucker McCue (James), Wendy Tucker Ludbrook (Chris), and Cody Tucker (Regan) and her grandchildren -Jack, Teddy and Pete McCue, Addie, Henry and Turner Ludbrook, Madelyn and Bennett Tucker and Katrina and Katron Wolfe, as well as her brother William H. Smith Jr., (Sandra) and numerous nieces and nephews. Rosie will be dearly missed by her family and all who knew her as a kind and loving person and model educator.
Rosie was born in Sandusky, Ohio on July 8, 1945, and raised on S. Columbus Ave with her brothers and cousins, who lived next door, enjoying the outdoors and creating memories that would last a lifetime.
She attended St. Mary’s High School and continued her education at Mary Manse College in Toledo, OH graduating cum Laude in 1967. She became a teacher in the Sandusky public schools following graduation.
Rosie married J. Michael Tucker in 1967 and became a mom to Molly, Wendy and Cody. She balanced being a wonderful and caring mother with teaching and volunteering for numerous charities and school events with her many friends and acquaintances. She lived in Bay View and appreciated the quietness of Sandusky Bay and the sunsets from the dock.
After the end of her first marriage, she reconnected with her old friend and first love, Ed Hiss, and they married in 1984. They embarked on a 42-year marriage, an adventure that took them to Central Texas and ultimately St. Louis where they resided for over 35 years. She taught in LaGrange, TX from 1984 to 1991 and finally at Christ the King School in University City from 1992 until her retirement in 2011. She was a continuous learner herself and completed a Masters Degree in Science from Fontbonne College in 2001. She made lifelong friends in both LaGrange and St. Louis where she and Ed enjoyed dinners, attending the kids’ events, playing bridge and laughing with everyone. She and Ed traveled extensively together appreciating the beauty and culture of many different places across four continents.
Rosie was a people person. Her smile and warm personality filled the room, always making those around her feel welcome. By the end of any gathering, she knew your life story and truly appreciated all the interesting anecdotes she learned. She was an avid runner, loved reading, gardening, traveling, adventures with her grandkids, and making her signature deviled eggs, along with brownies with powdered sugar on top. She developed a love of the St. Louis Symphony, Cardinals baseball, Notre Dame football and any sport her children and grandchildren were playing at the time.
A Funeral Mass will take place at 10am on October 24th at St. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church in Sandusky, Ohio with graveside services at Calvary Cemetery and a luncheon to follow.
