Kelly, Joy West
September 12, 1943 – September 5, 2022
Joy West Kelly passed away on Monday, September 5, 2022, after battling an unknown illness. She was the beloved wife of over 50 years to the late Michael L. Kelly. Dearest mother of Jill (Steve) Dillon and Matt Kelly. Dear sister of Rick (Ellen) Sappington, Randy Sappington, and the late Bobby (Chris Velasco) Sappington. Dear stepsister to Joanne Willson and Jim (Kathy) Heilig and dear sister-in-law of Nancy Sherman. Dearest grandma to her most loved granddogs Lolly and Mila.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Odalee (Bob) Sappington and Glenn (Peg) West. She was also a dear aunt, cousin, and friend to many.
Joy graduated from Ritenour High School in 1961 and then went on to graduate from St. Luke’s School of Nursing, becoming a Registered Nurse in 1964. She had a much-loved career in nursing until she retired from St. John’s Mercy Hospital in 2008. She ended her nursing career in the mother/baby unit. Her timing was perfect since she was able to be in the delivery room with many of her family and close friends when they delivered their babies.
Joy loved to travel and with her trip to Hawaii in March she completed her goal of visiting all 50 states. She was an avid crafter and sewer. She was always ready to alter a prom dress, embroidery a blanket or hem a pair of pants for whoever needed it! She participated in many craft fairs over the years even dragging along her children for help.
She was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in O’Fallon and devoted a lot of her time to Jesus and her church family.
She was always the life of the party with her smile lighting up the room. The world has lost a wonderfully gifted, kind, smart, beautiful, and fun lady who will be missed by many.

Joy’s name fit her so well. She certainly would like up a room when she entered. I attended water aerobics at Gold’s Gym with her for years. She also made several baby blankets for my family. She was talented, smart and funny.
My family sends condolences to you and your family. Joy will be missed.
