Mary Laux (nee Hugge) joined her husband Harvey on Friday, August 21, 2026, following a brief battle with vascular dementia.
Mary’s first title was daughter, and her second was sister. That was one of the titles she never set down — sister to Paul (Teri) Hugge, Martha (Marty) Timmer, Christine Hugge Goersch and John (Ruth) Hugge; sister-in-law to a family she loved as her own. Mary was a very proud mother to Mark (Charisse) Laux and Matt (Kate Thompson) Laux, and a proud aunt to many. But the title she wore most proudly came last: Memaw. Her granddaughter, Sydney K. Laux, was the joy of her life, and Mary never once missed a chance to tell someone so.
She and Harvey collected people. Those friendships started early. The women she met at Rosati-Kain became lifelong company — the kind of friends who know your whole story because they were there for most of it. Seventy years of birthdays, weddings, funerals, phone calls, and laughter that never really got old. Neighbors turned into friends, friends turned into family, and their door one that was always open. Their sons’ friends became an automatic extension of the family, too.
At St. Michael’s, lots of kids knew Mary. She gave herself a title there — Scholastic Environmental Engineer — and that was Mary in a single phrase: the humor and the pride, side by side.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Laux; by Paul & Teri Hugge; and by Martha, Marty, & Bill Timmer and Bob Laux.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation be made to either Tunnels 2 Towers or Backstoppers in her name.
Visitation
Family and friends are invited to gather at Kutis Funeral Home, 10151 Gravois Road, St. Louis, Missouri 63123, on Sunday, September 13, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. A short remembrance service will begin at 3:30 p.m.
