Lengyel

In Loving Memory

Lengyel, Joseph A.

Saturday, March 27, 2021.

Loving and ever supporting husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son and brother. Joe was born Sept. 29, 1937, the oldest son to Joe and Ethel Lengyel (nee May). Joe married his high school sweetheart Patricia McDonald (dec 1986). He proudly served his country in the United States Navy as an air traffic controller at Cecil Field in Jacksonville, FL. He then served Local 88 for over 40 years in local markets and eventually as President of the union. Since 1995, he enjoyed his golden years with wife Janet (nee Athanas).

Joe’s big and passionate personality left it’s mark on so many people, including kids he coached, people he worked with, and those he called friends.  He was a man of great integrity,, righteousness, conviction, and work ethic that set a standard for his children to follow. The optimist in Joe never let setbacks or sorrow keep him down. The glass was always half full. When life dealt him lemons, he made lemonade.

Joe was a proud left-hander, who acknowledged and complimented any left-handed person he came across. He often reminisced fondly of playing soccer for Mr. V’s Lounge, White Star, and in the over 30 leagues.

Loving and devoted husband to Janet, father to Sue (the late Mike) Kennedy, Lisa (Ed) Moore, Joe (Rosalie), and Krissy (Jim) Ryan; grandfather to 12 (Shannon, Jimmy, Erin, Joe, Krista, Michael, TJ, Jack, Grace, Madison, Sam, and Emma), great-grandfather to 15, uncle, father-in-law, brother-in-law, cousin, and friend. Preceded in death by wife Patricia, parents Joe and Ethel, and brothers Roger, Bill, and Tom.

Services: Memorial visitation at KUTIS AFFTON CHAPEL, 10151 Gravois, Saturday, April 3, from 1:00 p.m. until memorial service time at 3:00 p.m. Interment will be held in private. In lieu of flowers, donations to deGreeff Hospice House appreciated.

  5. Joe was one of the finest Union leaders I ever had the pleasure of working with but over time Joe became so much more to me. Joe became a true friend and I’ll miss our get togethers for breakfast and lunch; sometimes just us and sometimes with others. You will be missed but never forgotten.

  7. We lost a truly wonderful person when Joe passed. One of the best labor leaders and a great human being who always put the interests of others first. The world would be a much better place if more people were like Joe. He will always be remembered.
