William Lynn Maxfield (Bill), age 80, entered the joy of our Lord on November 29, 2025. Bill was born in San Bernardino, CA on October 24, 1945 to KennethLudlow Maxfield and Ruth Lois (Fortune) Maxfield. He married Marlene Ann (Brueggemann) Maxfield on May 11, 1968, in St. Louis, MO. He is survived by Marlene and their family: William August and Melissa Ann (Wehmeyer) and their sons, William Quinn and Grant Donovan; Matthew Kenneth and Ally Renee (Favre) and their daughters Rosalina Favre and Vida Favre; and Mark Louis and Sarah Elizabeth (Shearman) and their sons Noah David; Ezra Christopher, and Jonah William.
Bill was preceded in death by his father Kenneth, mother Ruth, his brother Kenneth, and his sister Linda.
Bill enjoyed growing up in Salem, MO and had many stories to tell of his adventures playing sandlot and American Legion baseball, riding his bike around town, and participating in basketball and football in high school. Bill graduated from Salem High School in 1963. Not taking the direct route from high school to college graduation, Bill graduated from Forest Park Community College in 1970 with an Associates Degree in Engineering; a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Washington University in 1972; and a Master of Science in Civil Engineering in 1978 from the University of Missouri Rolla (classes at UMSL).
He used his skills as a civil engineer working for Sverdrup & Parcel; Ralston Purina; and Anheuser-Busch (23 years). After retirement he proudly became athletic director at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis for four years.
Bill and Marlene enjoyed 57 years of marriage highlighted by the births of their exceptional three sons; the addition to the family of three loving daughters-in-law; five incredible grandsons; and two talented granddaughters.
The Maxfields have been blessed to be members of Ascension Lutheran Church for 46 years. Bill served on the Board of Stewardship and as Chairman of the Board of Elders, participated in Men’s Club, and was always eager to attend Tuesday Morning Bible Study.
Bill was an active supporter of Word of Life Lutheran School. He coached his sons’ basketball teams, was chairman of the WOL basketball tournament concession stand, and wrote the questions for several trivia night fundraisers.
Bill loved coaching his sons’ baseball and basketball teams; watching them play other sports; bragging about his grandchildren; fishing at Montauk; the Cardinals; Johnny Cash; John Wayne; Gunsmoke; Civil War history; trivia; and ice cream.
Homes in South St. Louis, St. Louis Hills, and Oakville were always filled with love and laughter. In 2021 Bill and Marlene moved to Laclede Groves Retirement
Community in Webster Groves.
SERVICES: Visitation will be held at Kutis Affton Funeral Home, 10151 Gravois, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM on Friday, December 5th. The funeral service will be held Saturday, December 6th, at 11:00 AM, with visitation from 10:00 – 11:00 AM, at Ascension Lutheran Church, 5347 Donovan, St. Louis, MO 63109. Interment will be at St. Trinity Cemetery, 2160 Lemay Ferry Road, St Louis, MO 63125.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ascension Lutheran Church 4: 19 Capital Improvement Fund or Word of Life Lutheran School Endowment Fund, www.wordoflifeschool.net/endowment.
