Born June 7, 1964, passed away on January 12, 2025, at the age of 60. He was the beloved son of Sally Schattgen (nee Toft) and the late William T Schattgen (2012). He is also survived by his sister Sandra Schattgen Walker and brother William “Tom” T. Schattgen Jr. (Linda), nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and friends.
Jim had a kind heart and showed great compassion for those in need. He loved helping others, just mention you needed something done and he was on the job. He was also very gracious in his giving and concern for others.
One of his true joys was going to Crestwood Fire Department and visiting with the crews. He knew everything about each vehicle down to how much water the fire engines would hold. He was always bringing them treats he and his mom would bake.
An avid sports fan, he watched them all, but his great love was hockey and the St. Louis Blues. He knew not only the players, but the referees and linemen. He could pretty much do the same with the Cardinals.
One of Jim’s favorite songs was “Angels Among Us” by Alabama. Now he is one of them watching over us.
“Oh, I believe there are angels among us…Sent down to us from somewhere up above. They come to you and me in our darkest hours. To show us how to live, to teach us how to give, to guide us with the light of love.”
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to The Backstoppers in memory of Jim and to honor the Crestwood Fire Department. Service will be private.
I am sorry to hear of the loss of Jim. When I worked at the Crestwood Fire Dept. we enjoyed his visits and knowledge. He was always in a great mood and we liked to see his mom also. He sure brought us some yummy treats. Thinking of you Sally and your family. Jim will be missed.
Jim was always good and kind to me. Every visit we made to see family in STL we were sure to see him, Sal and Bill. Memories of running around and playing ball at grammas house. The big bbq pit out back. Jim and the uncles standing around the pit in a very official sort of way. The way older dudes in your family know to do.
Jim would help my Dad (his uncle) with anything and everything. He was always kind and patient.
Jim loved his family very much. I’m so glad I got to visit with him this year when I was in STL for a few days.
He will be missed. Greatly.
