  9. One of the finest persons I ever met. Mike and I joined the Variety Guild at Queen of All Saints at the same time. Incredible talent and performer. If I ever had a question about New York, Mike was my go to guy. He will be sorely missed. Bob Bullman

  15. My wife and I were saddened to hear of Mike’s passing. He was such a fine singer and leader of songs at Queen of All Saints. He was always so pleasant and had such a positive outlook.
    I had the privilege of coaching Matt on the tennis team at St. Mary’s High school and my daughter, Anna Hutchinson, taught Maria at Notre Dame High school.
    When informed of Mike’s passing- my daughter summed it up well-“sweet, sweet man. “
    Our prayers are with the entire Smith family. May he Rest In Peace.
    Sincerely
    Francis and Benita Sohm

  25. Mike (yes Moose – I think he liked that nickname) was an inspiration and gift to all of us. His intellectual abilities in grammar school and high school were established. So were his basketball and ROTC credentials (Colonel of the Regiment!). Regardless, he was a compassionate person in the Xavier tradition.
    Please accept my sympathies for your loss.

  29. My dearest cousin and lifelong friend–we share in your sorrow and continue to pray for you, Matt and Maria. This song-How Can I Keep From Singing– makes me think of Mike and his musical talent especially in this verse

    I lift my eyes; the cloud grows thin;
    I see the blue above it;
    And day by day this pathway smooths,
    Since first I learned to love it,
    The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart,
    A fountain ever springing;
    All things are mine since I am his—
    How can I keep from singing?
