I shared a wall with Frank for a year at St. Mary’s — I think I learned more calculus from him — through the wall at volume — than I did from either of the teachers who were supposed to be teaching me calculus. He was very welcoming to me in my first high school teaching job and I will never forget his support and kindness. Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.

Frank was a model of generosity, professional expertise, dedication, and energy as a colleague on the SM faculty as well as a steady friend over many years.

I never knew Frank as a teacher while I was a student at St Mary’s. I graduated in 1970 and he was a student assistant then. It was only later as I talked with him after Mass or at White House retreats that I got to know him. I was happy to hear his stories about his teaching career at St Mary’s. He will certainly be missed.
I’ll always be grateful for the chance to get to know Frank as a colleague and a true friend. He was a true gentleman in everything he did and said. Students loved and respected him. His dedication, kindness, care, expertise, and love will be cherished memories.
Mr. Sohm was a great teacher and a fine man. I was lucky to have him as my calculus teacher at St. Mary’s in the 1970s. Gave me a great foundation for my career in physics. May he rest in well-deserved peace.

Frank & I started at SM in 1967. Wife & I had one car. Frank picked every morning for two years. Typical of Frank.
Great teacher but also a great man!!! In the mid 70’s, he and Brother/Father Mike Barber would open the gym for us in the summer and they would play basketball with us. He played basketball the same way he did everything else….all in and full out. Whenever I came back to watch one of my nephews play ball he always came over to me and shook my hand and welcomed me back with that big Frank Sohm smile. You will be missed my friend but never forgotten.
Although I did not have Frank as a teacher I saw when I walked by his classroom that he was a dedicated teacher. Several of my friends had Frank for Calculus class and they commented that they could solve the Calculus problems in their sleep!
I worked with Frank at St. Mary’s High School when I began my teaching career and he was very helpful with advice and suggestions. His enthusiasm and dedication as a teacher and his willingness to help his students had not changed since my days as a student. What a role model he was! Thank you for your years of service and the help you gave me. Rest in peace

Dear Benita, Anna and Joe,
We were very saddened to hear of Frank’s death. We have very fond memories of Frank and your family from our years together at St. Simon’s. You both dedicated yourselves to serving the parish in various ways. Bill, especially, has pleasant memories of coaching with Frank at St. Simon’s. After leaving St. Simon’s we were still able to meet at both of our grandchildren’s sporting events, and the past two years at the Grandparents’s Mass at Vianney. Frank was always so friendly. He dearly loved his family and was extremely proud of each of you.

I was a student of Mr. Sohm in the 1970s. Every year when I got my schedule, it had Mr. Sohm as my math teacher…. three years in a row. I use to mutter how lucky am I? In hindsight, I was very lucky.

Sohm family. So sorry for your loss. Know that Frank’s sayings, energy, and faith are not lost, but cherished and remembered. It was so nice sharing stories and laughs in honor of Frank. He taught me a whole lot of math and a lot about being a young man and person. I am also a fellow teacher and his example is one I draw from and share often. Please know you’re in our prayers and Frank is playing basketball or tennis, or keeping the stats at least in Heaven.
I had Frank Sohm for math two years at St. Mary’s High School. He was tough but he was fair and it was abundantly obvious that this man had a passion for his subject matter and truly cared that his students learned what he was teaching. I graduated in 1974 and assumed I’d never see him again. In 1991 I moved to South St. Louis County and enrolled at Queen of All Saints Parish. One Sunday I spotted Frank in church but wasn’t sure it was him. Then I heard him speak and KNEW it was my old teacher. I once talked with him at length about the plight of St. Mary’s and his passion for the school was very evident. From Kindergarten through college I had many wonderful teachers but in those seventeen years two stood out in front of the rest. One was an Economics professor at UMSL. The other was Mr. Sohm. I feel honored to have been taught by him. I also want to compliment his son and daughter on their wonderful eulogies as well as his granddaughter who sang a wonderful solo at the funeral mass. I coached tennis at SLUH for years and always looked forward to playing St. Mary’s so that I could talk to Frank. He was smart, fair, always a gentleman, fun to be with, and a wonderful human being. He left a positive impression on me that stays with me.
