In Loving Memory

Turner, Haskell Eugene

October 9, 1935 - October 15, 2026

Haskell Eugene Turner, 91, was born on October 9, 1935, in Griffin, Georgia. In true Haskell fashion, even his arrival into the world came with a story — thanks to a hospital mix-up with his birth records, he had the unusual distinction of having two birthdays! Along with two birthdays, he also went by multiple names: “Haskell,” “Gene,” and a family favorite, “Boss Man.”

Gene shared an extraordinary love story with his beloved wife, Tommie. The two met in high school, beginning a romance that would span nearly seven decades of marriage. This coming March, they would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Together, they raised three children, Tammy, Kim, and Renee, and built a beautiful family that grew to include 13 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

Gene was truly one of a kind. He was a man who appreciated order, took pride in keeping everything neat and tidy, and liked things done just so. But he was equally known for his quick wit, playful teasing, and a sense of humor that occasionally crossed the line of what was appropriate — which only made him all the more endearing. He loved emailing jokes and had a special knack for creating personalized birthday cards that brought smiles to those lucky enough to receive them.

Gene enjoyed a successful career in computer programming with the federal government, where his intelligence, skill, and dedication allowed him to excel. His love of technology extended well beyond his career, especially when it came to his cars. Known for trading in his vehicles for something new every couple of years, Gene appreciated a good car and an even better sound system. And, of course, there was his memorable Volkswagen Bug.

Perhaps some of the most cherished memories of Boss Man were made at his beloved lake house in Raintree. It was a place where the door was always open, where friends quickly became family, and where countless summers were spent making memories that would last a lifetime. Gene loved taking family and friends out on his boat, proudly showing off the lake he loved so much. Whether it was someone’s first visit or their fiftieth, everyone was made to feel right at home.

Though the years at Raintree eventually became treasured memories, the laughter, boat rides, and summers spent together remain a lasting part of Gene’s legacy. For those fortunate enough to have shared those days, the lake will always bring back memories of Boss Man and the warmth of a home where everyone belonged.

Of all the things Gene accomplished in his 91 years, perhaps his greatest was the life he built alongside Tommie — a love story that began in high school and grew into a family, a lifetime of memories, and a legacy that will endure for generations. He will be remembered for his unmistakable personality, his humor, his generous hospitality, and the way he made ordinary moments extraordinary.

Gene is survived by his loving wife, Tommie; his three children, Tammy (Mike), Kim (Kelly), and Renee (Drew); 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and his younger brother, Larry, along with many extended family members and dear friends.

He was reunited in eternal rest with his mother, Mildred Pruitt; his father, David Turner; and his older sister, Bobbie Jean.
