Sterling Viehoever died late Monday, August 22, 2022 following a long battle with type I diabetes and end stage kidney disease as well as severe, intractable back pain. He had just celebrated his 46th birthday a few days before his passing.
Sterling was born in 1976 to Kent Viehoever and Barbara Galinsky Viehoever in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C. He became a big brother to Spencer in 1984. He moved to the Boston area in high school and attended college at University of Massachusetts at Lowell where he completed his bachelor’s degree in computer science. He spent one year volunteering in impoverished areas of Appalachia before taking his first job in Nashville, TN building the first website for booksamillion.com. In 2003, he married his wife, Amy Robichaux at the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Nashville. Sterling and Amy moved to St. Louis in 2006 and have lived there since that time except for a 3.5 year stay in the Bay Area of California. He spent the majority of his career working for companies in the health care industry building and implementing software infrastructure.
The pride and joy of Sterling’s life was being a parent to Therese and Ellie. Therese, born in 2007, became a big sister to Ellie in 2011. It is an understatement to say that Sterling’s primary passion in life was to be the perfect father to Therese and Ellie. Everything that he did was aimed at providing the best life possible to his girls. He made everything fun from reading books to them at bedtime with amazing character voices to chore time with silly antics and threats of tickling. The kids especially would love when he told stories of how he would take care of (and sometimes terrorize) his brother Spencer and his younger cousins Brandon, Tyler, and Gabe.
He was also passionate about his Catholic faith and teaching children in a fun and educational way. He taught Sunday school to 5th graders in Nashville and often led the Children’s Liturgy at St. Margaret’s of Scotland church prior to COVID. Therese, Ellie, and Amy hope to continue his legacy of making learning about God and faith fun by continuing his efforts in leading the Children’s Liturgy.

I am so very sorry to hear about this. Deepest condolences and prayers to Amy, Therese, Ellie, and the family at this most difficult time. It was wonderful to be able to reconnect briefly this last May. Although I am unable to make it to St. Louis today. I will be joining in the 7pm Rosary for Sterling remotely. I take comfort in knowing that Sterling is now with our Lord in a better place, but it will not be the same without him.

I am Sterling’s aunt Debbie. I admired him and loved him very much. In his early years, he was often played with his cousin. I am saddened that I only found out a month later.
