In Loving Memory

Whitaker, Joaquina Carmen (nee Armengol)

December 27, 1931 - September 29, 2024

Fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church Sunday, September 29, 2024.  Beloved wife of the late John H. Whitaker.  Dear mother of Leo (Kris Brill) Asaro, John (Ellen Meadows) Asaro, Leslie (Brett) Brandtjen and Annette (Todd) Vohs.  Dear grandmother of Alexandra (Giannis) Fikas, Vanessa (Travis) Schaller, Matthew Brandtjen, Kyle Brandtjen and Danica Vohs.  Dear great grandmother of Daphne Fikas, Zoe Fikas and Walter Schaller.  Dear sister of John (Mary Jane) Armengol and Frances (John) James.  Former wife of Anthony Asaro.  Our dear sister-in-law, aunt, cousin and friend.

Joaquina was born in Barcelona, Spain and arrived with her parents in the USA in 1932 at just six months old.  She grew up near Carondelet Park, graduated from Cleveland High School in 1950, and was a member of the Spanish Society.  She raised four children in her cherished South County home, in which she lived for 62 years until the age of 90.  Her and her beloved late husband John were inseparable until his recent passing.  Joaquina possessed unusual beauty, a sweet disposition and a feisty sense of humor which never failed to make friends and family laugh.  She was proud of her Catalan heritage, which endowed her with a toughness and perseverance that served her well throughout her life.  Joaquina will be sorely missed.
