  3. Dear Joe,

In the fall of 2013 our coach nominated me for a leadership program. Part of the application process was to submit a paper about an inspirational leader. This could have been any leader at any time in the history of the world. I never told you, but you were the leader I chose.

That fall you lit a fire. The inspiration that burned from that fire was palpable. The fear and uncertainty which surrounded your teammates and friends was burned to ashes. In the rubble you laid bricks that built better men.

On a September night in Fayette Missouri the ball was in slow motion when it left your foot. Just before the net rippled there was an eruption. Within seconds, a mixture of celebration and confrontation but hero was nowhere to be found.

You grabbed me by the shirt, whisking me to the other side of the field to plead with the referee in hopes that he would not mention in his report why our teammate had received a second yellow card (for language), knowing that our athletic director would issue him a suspension which would have weakened our team. Leadership by example.

We believed in you like the Greeks believed in Achilles. The best thing was that you believed in us the way we believed in you. I loved you for that and will always remember you as that man.

It hurts me deeply even to write this, but I am consoled by the fact that the impact you had on many other lives will live here on earth until we see you again.

    Rest in peace,

    Ryan J. Krupp
    Your dear friend and teammate

  5. I keep hoping this news isn’t true. Joe, I only knew you for a short time, but I’m glad as heck that I got to. I saw the good in you, it shined when you let it. Since I’ve heard the news, I googled you to look even deeper than what I knew. Looking at your achievements, golf videos, and knowing how many people you helped by coaching and just sharing your knowledge. Lots of people saw what I saw, and I’m glad to say I got to be your friend, even it was just for a short while. I’ll think about you every time I touch a soccer ball, I’ll miss our Xbox nights and chats on the headset while we played. Getting to know you was a decision I’ll never regret, and I’ll make sure your name lives on.

  7. I went to high school with Joe. He was my friend; he always made me feel seen, even when I thought I was considered a nobody. He was always so kind, and nice to anyone he encountered. I still remember he and I goofing off in history class and we always got into trouble for it. After all these years, he ran into my mom and he asked about me. I had no idea he remembered me. He was such a genuine person. He and I messaged after this encounter, and I will forever keep his words on my phone as a reminder to always be good like Joe. I’m sad that I cannot make it to his memorial, but I know we can say our goodbyes in other ways. I just hope his family knows that Joe will be missed by so many. Joe was truly a wonderful person. His smile was wide and vibrant and could light up a room. He was a spark of energy, and he left an impact on so many lives. I’m very sorry about Joe’s passing; he will be missed by so many.

  8. I am so sorry to hear this about Joe. I will always remember his passion for the game both as a player and coach. I was fortunate to talk with Joe a few years ago about coaching and life. Joe had such a beautiful smile and always had a positive outlook. I have no doubt he touched a number of players lives he coached.
Prayers and condolences to the family.
