Walter-Klein

In Loving Memory

Klein Jr. Walter F. (Wally)

Age 78, died suddenly in his home on October 17, 2022.  He was born at home in Crystal City, Missouri on October 9, 1944, the day the St. Louis Cardinals won the World Series against the St. Louis Browns.  He attended Sacred Heart Elementary School and Crystal City High School.  He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in History from University of Missouri (MIZ!) and later with a Master’s Degree in Education from Washington University.  He was a 2d Lieutenant in the US Army, and served in the Vietnam War. He worked for over 30 years as a Director of Education and Training, then Director of Organization Development for Barnes Hospital.

He was married to Sharon Klein (Ponzar) for 56 years, after knowing her since age 13.  He had two children, Nathanial Klein and Rachel Gray (Craig Kallen).  His three grandsons were the apple of his eye: Thurston Gray (15), Kellen Klein (5), and Caleb Klein (4).  He was predeceased by his parents, Walter F. Klein Sr. and Iris Klein (Phillips), and his older sister Myrna Esther (Jim).  He is survived by his generous younger brother, Stephen Klein (Laurie), and his niece and nephews Nancy Esther, Jim Esther, and Mathew Klein.

He will be remembered for his intelligent mind, quirky humor, and most of all his deep love for the St. Louis Cardinals and Missouri Tigers, which he has passed down to his children.  He enjoyed reading about history and mysteries, working crossword puzzles, and watching old Western movies.  He could beat anyone at Jeopardy!  He donated to the St. Louis Zoo every year for 50 years.  He was honest and generous, and he loved his family. He will be missed.

  1. Wally and I were classmates at Sacred Heart School, and roommates at the University of Missouri. He did have a quirky sense of humor and will be missed.
