In Loving Memory

Carls, Cora S.

Died peacefully on January 5, 2023 at Mercy South Hospital with her loving family by her side.

Born March 13, 1935 in Bonne Terre, MO to Anna (nee Thompson) and Zeno Carrow, who preceded her in death.

She was the cherished youngest child of seven children, George (Gussie) Carrow, Mae Carrow, Chester (Glenda) Carrow, Mary (Bill) Corum, Molly (Tom) Valleroy and Zeno (LaVerne) Carrow.  Only LaVerne survives her.

Corey was a graduate of Bonne Terre High School and a registered nurse having worked at City Hospital, Koch Hospital, Barnes Jewish Hospital, all in St. Louis as well as Kaiser Permanente in Hawaii.  She was also a private duty nurse while she resided in Hawaii.  However, she spent the last fifty years doing the job that she loved the most, being a wonderful mother to six daughters, Julie (Jamie) Holder of Imperial, Debbie (Ken) Brotherton of Imperial, Tracy (Darek) Dunlap of St. Louis, Becky (Zane) Campbell of Kirkwood and Emilie Carls of Affton.  An even more wonderful grandma to twenty grandchildren, Chris (Michaella) Holder; Morgan (Matt) Laude; Kelsey Holder; Laura (Ryan) Armsby; Dan Brotherton; Jen (Joe) Tintera; Matt (Rosetta) Brotherton; Corey, Maddie, Christian and Emma Dunlap and Olivia, Carter, Ella and Mia Campbell.  And the most wonderful great grandma to nine great grandchildren, Annora and Delilah Laude; Tyler, Ava and Sophia Armsby; Zoe Brotherton; Evie and Theo Tintera and Phoebe Brotherton. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.

Art was her passion so in 1996 Corey received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Maryville University. She loved to paint watercolors.

Corey enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her family and friends.  She was an avid reader and loved to devour as many books as she could.  She enjoyed music and dancing and was a loving caregiver to her many pets.

Corey spent many summers on Tybee Island, GA and was a loving second “mom” to all the children in the neighborhood.  She never met a stranger and thoroughly enjoyed meeting people and learning their stories.

Corey will be missed by everyone whose life she touched.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or Shriners Hospital for Children.

Visitation will be held at Kutis Funeral Home (10151 Gravois Rd., St. Louis, MO 63123) on Wednesday, January 11 from 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM.  A funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 12 at 10 am at Kutis Funeral Home.

  5. Cora “Corey” as we called her from 1st grade on was a dear and life long friend that we always knew we could talk, share, talk about our childhood, our parents, struggles, joys, and anything else!

One has long lasting friends and Corey and I shared so many of life’s ups and downs.

She loved her family and was so giving all of her life.

May she have peace and happiness with the Lord and her loved ones who have gone before her.

For me, she will never be forgotten and always lived.

  13. The first time I saw Cory was the first day of grade school She was the cutest little thing. She had on a pink dress with a bonnet to match. I went home and told my mother there was a little girl at school who had on a baby hat. It was actually a little bonnet that matched her dress that was the start of our friendship.. we play together at home and at school we were in study hall together in high school and the teacher would move me to keep me from annoying Corey. The next day he would move Corey to keep her from bothering me. We could never decide which one of us was annoying the other we were just having fun this went on for 12 years 8 years at the Catholic School 4 years Bonne terre high School. 1953 we graduated in 1953 and we went separate directions for a while I was in Cape at school and I was so busy working and studying that I couldn’t go home very often. One day the phone rang and Corey ask, how much money does it cost to go to that place within 2 weeks we were both enrolled in summer school. Fun doesn’t describe what we did. We spent a lot of time jitterbugging to Elvis. I went home to teach and Corey soon followed me I have a quote from Harry vargo that described the next year well. He said” I wish you girls would be in as big a hurry to leave the place on Saturday night as you are to leave church on Sunday morning.”that pretty much describes the next year. In August I got married.and move to Wisconsin and remain friends and stay that way for the rest of our lives I tried to write about all the things we did I’d run out of time. And later years we visited back and forth between St Louis Salem Bonne terre I finally settled in Salem for good and we visited some since I had Summers off, we traveled a lot with my new husband, Ernie we went to England, Ireland, camping in Colorado and Cardinals summer training. We travel the entire West Coast and had more fun than people our age should. I visited her down south and had much fun. I can’t believe that she is gone. I know it but I still can’t believe it. I always called her when something exciting happened now, whom should I call. I’ll never get over missing her and I don’t regret anything we did together, even our our infamous cruise down the Ohio River. I only regret that it had to end. She will always live in my heart
