William Grant Eaton, born 12/30/1932, passed peacefully at home on 2/20/2019. Loved by, wife Jean; Siblings Doris, Francis, the late Jeannie, & Robert; Children the late Michelle, Julie & John; Grandchildren Alyssa, Nick, Erin, Lindsay, Klayton, Brooklynn, & Dylan; Great-grandchildren Rowan & Otto; forever in our hearts.
A sonarman in the Korean War & Local 600 Teamster, William worked diligently to provide and spoil his family. His service was honored by his own son John’s enlistment in the navy as a boatswains mate. William was an avid sportsman and played for The Pirates softball team, where he met his wife Jean celebrating one evening. His love for sports shined throughout his life, and through his grandson Nick. William would drive any distance, no matter the hour, to cheer Nick on; his visits so frequent he was dubbed “Grandpa Bus” and issued a plaque. William and Jean were members of South Broadway Athletic club, where he served as the treasurer, and spent many of their nights socializing with friends and organizing events.
William was a multifaceted man who never stopped trying to fill everyone’s hearts with happiness. He sang “Sweet Caroline” better and more frequently than Neil Diamond; even in his last weeks, songs left his lips more than complaints. It could never be guessed what joke or wry comment he would say next; all of which were appreciated because of the love inherent in his commentary. From crafting handmade collages to self-studying history, William kept his mind active at every moment and encouraged his family to never stop learning.
As generous as he was loving, William never allowed anyone to forget that they were important. His heart of gold and spirit now flow through the laughter we are blessed enough to have surrounding his memories. The pride he had in his family was ever apparent in the gentle love he provided at every opportunity. There are no words for how he touched every person lucky enough to know him. Husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, we are all better because we came from you, thank you for your influence and for coloring all our lives with happiness, he will forever be missed.
