Born on October 25, 1928, in Yugoslavia, Theresa Oppelz entered eternal rest on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at the age of ninety-six. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Wilhelm Oppelz; her granddaughter, Sabrina Hughes; her great-grandson, Ian Hughes; her parents, siblings, and numerous family members and friends.
Theresa was the cherished mother of Anna Marie Mathes, Bill (Barbara) Oppelz, and Lori (the late Gary) Hughes; a dear grandmother to Elizabeth (Jeff) Schunzel, Eric (Regina) Oppelz, Erica Mpoy, and Gary Hughes Jr.; a proud great-grandmother to Benjamin, Giselle, Dominic, and Ivanna Oppelz, Charlotte Schunzel, Xander Hughes, Gary III and Conner Hughes, and Brooklyn and Grayson Mpoy; and a great-great-grandmother to Saylor Oppelz.
An active member of the German Cultural Society for many years, Theresa could always be found dancing or cooking for the masses, passionately preserving her cultural traditions. A gifted cook, she delighted in creating meals that brought family and friends together, often making delicious cookies and breadsticks that will be remembered by many. When she wasn’t in the kitchen, she enjoyed crocheting beautiful pieces for all to enjoy. Above all, Theresa cherished spending time with her family, watching her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-granddaughter grow and thrive.

Anna, Bill and Lori. Condolences to you and your family.
Bill and family,
We just heard from Benjamin that your Mom had died.
I know you and the family will have many fond memories of Omi. The children would speak of the delicious food she would make and I was able to see first hand the beautiful Afghans she would create.
The picture and her smile are just as I remember her.
Our prayers to all.
