Alan enlisted in the military in 1951. Reached the rank of Sergeant in the Marine Corps and was discharged in 1957. Alan was very proud of his time in the Marine Corps and proudly displayed his Korean Veteran designation on his door. Especially enjoyed his Honor Flight trip to Washington, DC.
Alan married his wife, Marian, on July 4, 1954 while home on leave. After leaving the military, he furthered his education by attending and graduating from Washington University while raising a young family and working at the same company, Laclede Gas, his entire career. After a fruitful career in various positions throughout his tenure, he retired at age 62 as industrial and commercial sales manager. He developed close friendships with his fellow Laclede Gas co- workers and enjoyed meeting at monthly get togethers years beyond his retirement.
Alan and his wife Marian were devote Catholics and members of St. Martin of Tours parish for 70+ years. Family was raised and friends were made at St. Martin’s. Alan was born and raised in Lemay Missouri. He raised his family in Lemay. Lemay was home from growing up on Horn Ave. to owning his first home on Nannette Circle to building his home on Telford Dr. Oh, the memories of a wonderful life he built for his wife and family!

He was loved by many & he will be missed. We enjoyed his last 4. Years together… he always wanted to go somewhere & not be left out. He acted younger than his age. I was privileged to know & be with him… rest in peace my friend… Mary Dobbins

I will miss my good friend and the special times we shared both at work and in retirement . At work he set high expectations and demanded the best of your efforts towards achieving desired results. I learned so much under his leadership that served to guide my career in in so many positive ways. I respected him so much that I continued that relationship into the 12 years of my retirement. Al was a thoughtful and generous man that I greatly admired. I will cherish the memories and friendship we shared. Until we meet again I will continue to raise my manhattans to toast the good times we shared.
To the Schaeffer family: I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Al. May you find comfort in the cherished moments you shared together, and may his memory bring you peace. Al and Marian have been a part of my life since I was born. My mom always considered Marian to be her best friend and my dad thought the same about Al. I have fond memories of their high school group’s get togethers, fishing trips to Table Rock and Taneycomo and vacationing together. What an amazing person Al was and what a remarkable life he led. I feel so lucky that he was part of our family.
