November 13, 1956 - December 24, 2025

James Charles Sondermann, age 69, of St. Louis, Missouri, fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church, passed peacefully on Wednesday, December 24, 2025.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Richard L. Sondermann, Sr. and Teresa Sondermann (née Sweeney), his beloved wife, Colleen Sondermann (née McCaffrey), and his brother Thomas Sondermann.

James is survived by his devoted children, Christina Sondermann Capizzi, James R. Sondermann, and Stephen I. Sondermann; his seven cherished grandchildren; and his loving companion, Sandy Vest. He will also be fondly remembered as a beloved father-in-law, brother, uncle, and friend.

SERVICES: Funeral from KUTIS AFFTON CHAPEL (10151 Gravois Rd., 63123) on Saturday, January 3, 9:15 AM to St. Gabriel the Archangel for 10:00 AM Mass. Interment at Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation Friday from 5:00 – 8:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Blood Cancer United (formerly The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society).

  1. My sincere condolences to the Sondermann family & to Sandy Vest. It was such a pleasure getting to know Jim, he truly was a hero. He fought so hard and was always so sweet and always had a smile on his face. He truly was a kind gentle soul and one of my most favorite patients. Rest in Peace Jim.

  2. I had the pleasure of working with Jim in my tenure at Charter Communications. . Always a gentleman, easy to work with and such a nice person you wanted to be around. He was my alderman also as was Colleen. May God be with his family as they navigate this time of loss. Peace be with you.

  7. Jim was fellow classmate at Bishop Dubourg and later was my alderman. Jim was a nice guy to know and my condolences go out to his family. May he rest in peace.

  8. I came to know Jim through our work on the Tilles Park restoration. I moved out of the twentythird Ward before it’s completion but still ran into Jim now and then. He commented on a picture I posted from Glacier National Park this past August. Jim was always a soft talking gentle soul. To hear of his passing was truly saddening. Good-bye, Jim, see you on the other side.

  9. Jim was a classmate of mine at Bishop Dubourg. He was also my Alderman in my area of the city. He was a nice guy to talk to and helped out the city of St. Louis with his political knowledge. My Condolences to the Sonderman Family.

  12. I’m saddened to hear of Jim’s passing. I had the privilege of working with him in the Mayor’s office, and he taught me so much about navigating the Board of Aldermen and the art of lobbying. But more importantly, Jim reminded me that family comes first and that politics is just something we do—not who we are. His wisdom and kindness will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, my friend.

  13. My condolences to the Sonderman family and Sandy. He was a remarkable man and a wonderful coworker at the Water Division. I sincerely enjoyed working for/with him. His smile and quiet humor was so refreshing.

    My heart breaks for you all. He will be greatly missed.

  14. Sorry to hear about Jim’s passing. Enjoyed working with him on the Soldiers Memorial Commission and several Mardi Gras fundraising booths. Lovely person.
