Stahlhuth, Polly Jean

February 26, 1938 - August 7, 2023

Polly Jean Stahlhuth, 85, of Webster Groves, passed peacefully on August 7, 2023. Polly was the daughter of the late Dr. Frank G. and Geneva Pauline (Brookhart) Mays, and was born on February 26, 1938, in Washington, Missouri.

Polly was a graduate of Washington High School, and went on to attend the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she was an active member of the Alpha Phi Sorority and graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Education. She also obtained her Master of Arts in Teaching from Webster University and would go on to be a music teacher.

Polly met the love of her life, Roger Stahlhuth, while she was a student at Mizzou. The couple married on June 16, 1960, at St. Peter’s United Church of Christ in Washington. They had just celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. Roger and Polly shared a love of Mizzou and established many lifelong friendships through the Lambda Chi Fraternity which remain to this day.

Polly was an avid golfer and loved spending time on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina with her family and friends. For more than twenty years, she taught Sunday School at Peace United Church of Christ in Webster Groves, combining her love of teaching and music.

Polly was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Frank Mays II and William G. Mays II; and one brother-in-law, Thomas Ostermeier.

She is survived by her husband Roger Stahlhuth; two sons, William Stahlhuth (Michele) of Washington and Bruce Stahlhuth (Kelly) of Webster Groves; one sister, Laurell Ostermeier; sister-in-law, Helen Mays; niece and nephews Frank Mays III (Rose), Nancy Walsh (Kevin) and Daniel Mays; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth Spica (Paul), Edward Stahlhuth (Lauren), Mark Stahlhuth (Morgan Patin), Thomas Stahlhuth (Kallie), Ethan Stahlhuth, Trevor Beuke and Zoe Sykes; four great-grandchildren, Michael and Charlotte Spica, Benjamin Candrl Beuke and Emma Stahlhuth; and a beloved dog, Rosie.

A memorial service will be held at Kutis Affton 10151 Gravois, at 1:30 P.M. on Monday, August 14, 2023. Visitation the same day will occur between 10:00 AM and 1:30 PM. Memorials in lieu of flowers can be made to Shriners Children’s St. Louis | Children’s Hospital (shrinerschildrens.org), or to the Pauline Mays Scholarship Fund, c/o School District of Washington.
