In Loving Memory

Canterbury, Ruth Anne

August 19, 1959 - February 21, 2025

Ruth, devoted mother, talented writer, and gifted artist, passed away peacefully at the age of 65 at her home in Saint Louis.

Born and raised in New Orleans, Ruth carried the warmth and vibrancy of her hometown throughout her life. Though she made her home in Saint Louis for many years, her heart remained tied to the culture, music, and spirit of New Orleans.

Ruth was a gifted writer whose creative words enthralled those who read them and a skilled artist whose creativity painted the world in new and beautiful ways. Her work was a reflection of her sharp insight and deep compassion for others.

While Ruth was not religious, she believed firmly in the power of love, family, and kindness. Her greatest joy came from raising her daughters, Mariah and Ciara, whom she loved with all her heart. Ruth’s legacy is one of creative expression, unconditional love, unending determination, and the quiet strength she embodied every day.

She was always there to lend a listening ear and gave sound advice, regardless of disposition. Her kindness and inclusive nature lead to her having many “adopted” kids whom she treated just like her own.

Ruth is survived by her daughters, Mariah (Tyler) and Ciara (Ben), her brother, Kip (Kelly), and a wide circle of friends and admirers who were touched by her creativity, understanding, and boundless kindness. She will be deeply missed but forever remembered.

A “party of life” to celebrate Ruth will be held in Saint Louis at a later date. Details will be available soon.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to one of the three charities:

  • The St. Louis Society for the Blind and Visually Impaired
  • The American Diabetes Association
  • Humane Society of Missouri on Macklind

  1. Rest in peace Ruth. I have known you since 1964 (Kindergarten) to 1977 (Cleveland HS). You were such a kind and caring person. You will be missed by all who knew you.

  3. Ciara and Mariah,
Please let me know when The Celebration of life is going to be. If you need any readings, etc., please let me know. I have helped with memorial services before. I felt blessed to have Ruth as one of my first friends when I moved back to St. Louis. I loved doing things with your family with skating.
