In Loving Memory

Metherd, Susan (nee Wyrwich)

February 7, 1943 - March 18, 2026

Susan Metherd, born Lillian Susanne Wyrwich on February 7, 1943, passed away on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at Delmar Gardens in St. Louis, Missouri.

Susan was born in St. Louis to Lillian and Adolph Wyrwich and was raised in South City alongside her nine siblings—Mary, Thomas, Laura, Nancy, John, Joan, Helen, Angela, and Nora—in a devoted Catholic family.

She married the love of her life, David Metherd, in 1966, and together they built a family grounded in faith, resilience, and service. They began their life together in Alvin, Texas, where they started their family, before returning to St. Louis in 1976. Susan was a devoted wife who lovingly cared for David for over 40 years following his diagnosis with multiple sclerosis, a testament to her compassion and unwavering commitment.

Susan lived a life centered on caring for others. She was an avid volunteer in the pro-life movement, dedicating much of her time and energy to causes she deeply believed in. She was a woman of many talents and passions: an artist, a gifted cook, and a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She found joy in the quiet beauty of everyday life, especially while tending to her gardens, birdwatching, and playing the piano. Known for her warmth and wisdom, Susan was a wonderful conversationalist and a trusted source of advice to all who knew her.

Susan is survived by her sons Jeffrey (Stephanie Henschen), Stephen (Jill Kozup), and Andrew (Jennifer Mishka); her grandchildren: Jeffrey’s children Melanie (Evan Asher), Alayna, and Maya; Stephen’s children Ian, Olivia, and Emily; and Andrew’s children Jimmy, Annie, and Ella; and her great-grandchildren Frances, Vincent, and Samuel.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Metherd; her daughter, Jennifer Metherd; her parents, Lillian and Adolph Wyrwich; and siblings Mary, Thomas, and Laura.

Susan will be remembered for her selflessness, her strength, and the deep love she gave so freely to her family and community.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 31, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Kutis Funeral Home (Afton Chapel), 10151 Gravois Road, St. Louis, Missouri. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 1, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, 4220 Ripa Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery, 6901 MacKenzie Rd, St. Louis, MO 63123 In lieu of flowers, Masses, or memorials please donate to Missouri Right to Life (1000 Executive Parkway Drive, #229, 63141).

  2. Sue was one of the strongest women I’ve ever known – strong in so many ways. She was guided in everything by her uncompromising devotion to her Catholic faith. I was always amazed by her ability to take on so many tasks at once – and to do so with great humility. She was devoted to pro-life work, and was an inspiration to all of us who worked with her. Thank you, Sue, from all of us at Missouri Right to Life. I will miss our conversations, but will never forget this wonderful woman. Rest in peace, Sue – and tell Dave hello. May the angels greet you and take you to paradise.

  3. Sue was an amazing and beautiful woman. Through her enthusiasm and her friendly actions made working with her contagious mission for pro-life a fun event. I worked on many garage sales and Christmas card sales with Sue. She was my model of how to be a great pro-life worker. Her mission encouraged many others to join the pro-life movement and to be BOLD about it. She will be greatly missed.

  4. Sue Metherd and Dave Metherd were amazing people. For many years, Sue & I were co-coordinators for Missouri Right to Life’s “Missouri-Illinois Life Caravan” pro-life bus trip that went to Washington DC every January for the National March for Life. It was great to volunteer with her and to see her at other pro-life events over the years. Sue always had a sparkle in her eye & a lovely smile. I will hold her in my heart with good memories and will miss Sue tremendously. May her memory be a blessing. To Sue’s family & friends: Know that our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ holds you closely and comforts you — trust Him, lean on Him, live your lives for Him. Psalm 139; John 3:16; Jeremiah 29:11-14.

  6. Sue and Dave were very instrumental in modeling how to be a leader in Prolife work. I loved her smile and advise on whatever I could do to continue teaching the dignity of the Unborn, made in God’s image from the moment of Conception. Peace and prayers for her family.
