  1. I am heartbroken to hear of Jim’s passing. My deepest sympathies go out to the family. I grew up knowing the family and back in the day, Jim’s nick name was (Jim Bowie) going back to the 1960’s.

  2. So sorry to hear of Jim’s passing. He was a little order than me but he was a good guy who always had a smile and made you laugh. He was very competitive. I played sandlot soccer and football at old St. Marcus Cemetery with and against him. May our Great and Merciful Lord in Heaven send his Angels to comfort all of those in need during this time of grief.

  5. I knew Jim from Cleveland High School, we were on the gymnastic team together for one season. I have not seen Jim since probably 1975, when I joined the USMC. I was saddened today to hear of Jimmy’s passing.

May he rest in the peace of Jesus Christ; and that same peace guard and the family in their time of sorrow.

  6. Many memories with Jim growing up. Grade school and high school. At 15 we both took a job as lifeguards at an apartment complex in the central west end I remember my Mom driving us there. School picnics at OLS grade school. High school swim team he was a great diver for the team at Cleveland. Turner hall memories and the chili cook offs at the Jonaks house on Leona in the city. I last saw Jim at Holties restaurant in Imperial eating a birthday breakfast with his family in April. He said they love that place. RIP Jim you will be missed.

  13. My wife and I send our condolences to the entire family. Jim was my first roommate in college at WIU, and my first true friend. He made me feel welcome in a time when I was away from family and in a completely new environment. He welcomed me into his circle of friends and family and quickly became my brother away from home. His friends became mine, and mine became his. His talent as a goalkeeper was immense, but his true contribution was his sense of camaraderie and personal commitment to his team as reflected by his success in life. His loyalty, commitment to his causes, and sense of family made a huge impression on me and I still carry thise influences in me everyday. We stayed in touch for over 45 years and his loss will be irreplaceable. His quirky sense of humor will forever stay with us who found it sweet and endearing. Heaven will be a better place. Rest in Peace, Amigo.

  14. I’m so deeply saddened by the passing of my cousin Jim.
My memories of Jim when he was little was always a lot of energy running around. I will never forget the family dinners at our sitti (Grandma’s) house I would fly to St. Louis to stay at my cousin Kim‘s and Mike’s house only to find that Jimmy live next-door
Knowing I was a lover of popcorn, we all could not wait for Jimmy to come over and make the popcorn. He made the best popcorn. I’m sure it’s a secret he kept from a lot of people.
In reading about his life, I learned so much more about my cousin and what he did in the person he was that I never knew it makes my heart happy that he was so much more than I knew, but it saddens me more that I never knew that before
Rest in peace, Jimm your cousin

  17. I am so sorry to hear of Jim’s passing. The world is a poorer place for his absence. I worked with him at the juvenile court and so much enjoyed being able to swap stories with him, tell terrible jokes, and trade commentary on whatever was happening. He always had a smile and a kind word. He always made me day brighter. My deepest condolences to his family and other loved ones. I missed him when he left the court and now, I miss him more.

  18. On behalf of the family of the late Anthony and Eileen Slay {nee Forkan}, we extend our most heartfelt sympathy to the O’Toole family. Know too that we share in your sorrow and grieve for your loss. Jim will be remembered in our daily prayers to St. Patrick, as are his parents.

A favorite Irish prayer of our papa was one that he brought with him from the Village of Kiltimagh, in the County of Mayo when he arrived in St. Louis in 1912. He was just 18 years young then. “May the angels watch over you and guide you on your journey home and that the winds of heaven blow softly in your ear and whisper just how much we love and miss you.”
