In Loving Memory

Sood, Marion

Sood, Marion

(nee Amies)  Saturday, April 9, 2022. Beloved wife of the late Chaman L Sood; dear mother of Manoj ( Wendy) Sood, Manju Murphy, Vijay ( Monica) Sood, dear grandmother of Kayliani, Callum, Gavin, Carter and Parker. Dear sister of Susan Taylor, Robert (Susan) Amies,  and the late Valerie Griffith, and Gwen Smith. Our dear sister-in-law, aunt and friend.

Marion came to the United States at the young age of 24. Trusting only her instinct, and her passion for being a librarian.  After 13 months of delays and lobbying for her US VISA, Marion boarded the MS Europa in South Hampton England on Oct 15, 1967 destined for Sheboygan WI where she was to be the children’s librarian at Meads Public Library. She had obtained the position by mail from more than 3800 miles away.  Marion was adventurous and fearless having traveled to Russia in the mid 1960s, and throughout Europe as a young woman enjoying life to its fullest. She had a love of the art, Monet being her favorite.  She was an avid reader, with a book collection that was truly amazing. Gardening was her true passion and favorite pastime.  You could find her in her garden almost daily, no matter what time of the year.  Marion’s garden was actually featured in several local and community magazines, admirers coming from around the city.

Marion was followed to Wisconsin by her soon to be husband Chaman, whom himself had left home in India to pursue a life in England.  The relationship ensued and he found himself following Marion to the United States. Where they married in Dec. of 1968, ultimately making their home in St. Louis and raising their 3 children. Marion continued her passion for being a children’s librarian and spent the majority of her career working for the St. Louis City and County Public library systems.  Upon retiring from the library system she continued her love for children, spending many years working for the Affton -Lindbergh after school program.

Marion enjoyed going to the Missouri Botanical Gardens, the St. Louis Art Museum, and spent many years affiliated with the TBPA-English Club (The British Connection.)  Her greatest joy remained her children and grandchildren.  She will be fondly remembered by many and dearly missed by her family.

Services: Memorial visitation at KUTIS AFFTON CHAPEL, 10151 Gravois, Monday, April 18, 6-9pm. In Lieu of flowers, donations to Missouri Botanical Garden appreciated.

  13. Dear Manju and Manoj,
Please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of your mother. Though I did not know your mother, I used to pass by your home on neighborhood walks, and paused a few times to talk to her when she happened to be working in her garden. When she learned that I had been your counselor at LHS, she was always eager to talk about her children and grandchildren. May God Bless you during this difficult time.

  15. If I’m ever asked to pick one of my favorite relatives, I will proudly say Marion aunty, was in the top tier. She brought so much class, love and fun to our family.

I will never forget our fun gatherings in St. Louis or Chicago. Marion Aunty’s gardening skills were quite impressive and infectious. She always brightened up our gatherings with stories or book recommendations for my daughters.

My memories of her and uncle Chaman, will never fade. I will miss her presence but her spirit will live on.

Love your nephew- Vinay and family.

  17. You were the last of my sisters. There are many memories I have from when I was a small child and you guided me through life and when I came to visit you in the US as an adult. You were like a second mother to me and I will never forget you. My love always.
