Bill was an avid baseball and football fan. In 1951 as a senior at Roosevelt High School he was voted onto the Missouri all district baseball team as one of the best outfielders in the area batting .520 in 14 league games. Upon graduation he spent one year and half years on active duty with the 131st Air National Guard during the Korean conflict. After discharge he reported to the Brooklyn Dodgers training camp. He decided not to play in the minors and returned to St. Louis to pursue a college education on a baseball scholarship with the University of Missouri. Monsanto hired him as a summer intern and persuaded him to stay paying for his college education at night school. Bill attended St. Louis University and Washington University. After 38 years with Monsanto, Bill took an early retirement in 1991 to spend time with family and friends. He left Monsanto as Corporate Director of Transportation.
