In Loving Memory

Hess, Mary Alice (nee Tulley)

Mary Alice Hess left this world, and went to her reward on March 27, 2021.  Mary was born to Josephine M. Etzkorn Tulley and John J. Tulley on July 27, 1925, in Kirkwood, Missouri.  She was the middle child of five siblings: Betty, John, Bill, and Gerry.  Mary and Earl Hess were married May 25, 1948.  They had five children: Kathleen, Richard, David, Amy, and Scott.  They raised their children in the house Earl built in 1950, in Affton, Missouri, where Mary lived until her death.  Mary had nine grandchildren, Emily, Rachel, Sophia, Nathan, Charlie, Joe, Bob, Dan and Jonathan.  Great grandchildren are Gabriella, Melena, Lilah, and Margo.

Mary was an avid reader and a writer. She wrote her memoirs, hand written letters, as well as editorial comments to newspapers.  Mary was a well-informed citizen.  She is one of the few people who actually read political platforms and based her decisions on knowledge.

She enjoyed playing card games, including bridge and gin rummy, which she often won.  She was an excellent tennis player, as well as a golfer.  She and her husband loved dancing and dining out.  Traveling was a particular joy.  She and Earl travelled the world, and she and her daughters enjoyed many girls trips together. Her picture albums were her specialty, and she enjoyed revisiting all the places she had been.

Mary was a witty, funny, intelligent, and loving mother, wife, and friend.  Mary had us laughing every day.  Each morning, during her last few days, she would greet us with “Am I still here?  Or, did St. Joseph put someone ahead of me in line?? How long is this going to take? Am I in heaven yet?  She passed peacefully in her home.

Funeral from Kutis Affton Chapel 10151 Gravois Rd. 63123 on Thursday, April 1 at 10:45 am to Seven Holy Founders Catholic Church for 11:00 am. Service. Interment at Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation Wednesday 5-7 pm.

  5. Oh my God how we loved aunt Mary and Uncle Earl. As families the Tureks and Hesses couldn’t have been closer growing up. Mom is still hanging on although she would prefer to be with Norm Earl and now Aunt Mary enjoying all in heaven. God Bless them all.
