In Loving Memory

WHITAKER, JOHN H.

February 12, 1932 - June 28, 2024

John Whitaker, entered into eternal rest on June 28, 2024, at the age of 92. Devoted husband to his beloved wife of 33 years, Joaquina (Armengol). John was one of eight children born to the late John Herman Whitaker and Louella Whitaker, in Selmer, Tennessee. John is survived by his sisters June Cope and Peggy Smith and his step-children, Annette Vohs (Todd), Leslie Brandtjen (Brett), John Asaro (Ellen) and Leo Asaro (Kris) and step-grandchildren Alexandra Fikas (Giannis), Vanessa Schaller (Travis), Matthew Brandtjen, Kyle Brandtjen, Danica Vohs and step-great-grandchildren Daphne and Zoe Fikas. John was a cherished uncle, and great uncle to ten great nephews and three great nieces.

John served in the U. S. Army in active duty in the Korean War from December 1952 till November 1954. He enjoyed working at Dillard’s for 25 years, followed by bartending at Andre’s Banquets & Catering until he retired at 85 years old.

John loved to make people happy, was very generous, kind and thoughtful. He had a passion for baking, often surprising many friends and relatives with cakes and other treats over the years.  John would greet you with his strong handshake and always had a new joke to tell. He was a wonderful person, a good neighbor and a friend to all.  He will be sorely missed.

The family will hold a private service and interment at Mount Hope Cemetery.
On July 8, 2024, there will be a Celebration of Life remembering John, with family and friends, from 4-8pm at Andre’s 2, 4254 Telegraph Road, St. Louis MO 63129.  Remembrances and contributions can be made through Mount Grace Convent, mountgraceconvent.org  or Tunnels to Towers t2t.org.

  2. I am so sorry to hear of John’s passing. He was one of my absolute favorite customers while I was working as a teller where he banked. Always a smile, friendly and happy. He often brought in baked goods, donuts every Saturday morning just waiting for us to come in. Sometimes he cooked whole meals for our department feeding us lunch.
    John will always be remembered.
