Joyce M. Wessbecher (nee Fletcher) was born April 4, 1934, and returned to our Lord on August 11, 2026. The daughter of Harold and Evangeline Fletcher, Joyce was one of nine siblings (a 10th child did not survive birth). Life was celebrated in a BIG way for the Fletcher Family. Holidays, family reunion picnics, and milestone birthdays, throughout the decades, all involved food, fun and a family that kept growing in size. Even the family dog, Taffy, was a beloved member, enjoying when the children would buy the treat “cho-cho’s” for the dog. Kirkwood was the childhood home for this family. Joyce was the last surviving member of the initial Fletcher family. She remained everyone’s sweetheart. When Joyce met Richard (aka Dick) Wessbecher, the fun continued. They married in 1952. Together, they created their own family, with daughter Janet (Michael) Korman and son Richard Jr. (aka Tiger). They enjoyed life at Lake Montowese for nearly 20 years. When Dick passed in the early 1970’s, Joyce continued her loving concern and active engagement in the lives of her children. Joyce began work at Friendship Village in Chesterfield, after Dick’s passing. As a blind date and later falling in love a second time, Joyce married Paul Schattgen of Schattgen’s Bakeshop, a Korean War veteran. Together, they moved to Lake St. Louis. Paul’s three children Tod (Kimmi), Laura (Joe) Giorgianni, and Steve (Marnie), and their families embraced Joyce and appreciated her “Joy for Life.” Joyce brought their father Paul great pleasure as both individuals enjoyed golf, boating, traveling, and being with friends. Joyce and Paul were very social and soon many friends affectionately called her, “Joyce Schattgen.” As Paul departed this earthly realm in 2016, Joyce would walk the path around the golf course in their subdivision. A neighbor, Ed Krattli, called out to her, on one occasion. Ed, a single man all of his life, was an avid ping-pong player at the Lake St. Louis Community Association Center. Like Joyce, Ed was very social. Soon, Ed introduced Joyce to his many friends from ping-pong. Ed, Joyce and many of their friends enjoyed Friday dinners and Sunday Game Days together. Joyce was “pint-sized” compared to Ed, this 6ft+ veteran from World War II. Ed Krattli passed away on July 15, 2026, at the age of 99 years, loved by all who knew him. Joyce adopted Christian Science teachings in her early years of marriage to Dick Wessbecher. She loved reading “Jesus is Calling” for her daily morning meditations, in recent years. Joyce, now joins her family and friends in heaven where “the party” continues and hearts reunite in the Joy of Love and of God’s Grace. The Wessbecher Family is grateful to the Mercy Hospice team, private caregivers Nancy, Cindy, Sarah, and the amazing staff at St. Anthony’s Hospice House.
Services: The extended family and Joyce’s dear friends will share the Celebration of Joyce’s Life at the Lake St. Louis Community Association Clubhouse, Ballroom A, on Friday, September 11th at 10:00am.
