CW4 (Ret.) Charles “Charlie” E. Woolf Sr. was born in Clay County, Arkansas on November 6, 1931 during the Great Depression to Ghuyrane and Dorothy (nee: Montgomery) Woolf. He grew up working with his family in a cotton patch.
During his senior year of high school, the Arkansas National Guard medical unit from his hometown was called into service for the Korean War. Charlie quit school and was quickly shipped off to Korea. Charlie received a Bronze Star Medal for his bravery in the notable Battle of Triangle Hill as his platoon was responsible for removing hundreds of dead and wounded from the site. He returned home before he was old enough to vote and did not care to talk about his time in Korea much after that.
Charlie’s later military service was with the 880th Engineer Battalion at Jefferson Barracks in the administrative field. Charlie earned a college degree through the military, even though he was never able to earn a high school diploma – much to his dismay. He ended his Army career at the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4 with 42 years of service.
He was married to the love of his life, the late Helen V. (nee: Bunch) Woolf for 58 years before her passing. Together they welcomed a son, Charles E. Woolf Jr., and resided in Oakville, MO.
Charlie will be remembered for his patriotism, thriftiness, and willingness to help anyone in need. He will be missed by his family, friends, and the many soldiers he helped with their military careers.
Charlie passed away on Tuesday, August 23, 2022 and was reunited in Heaven with his beloved wife Helen. He is survived by his son Charles E. Woolf Jr., daughter-in-law Kim Woolf, grandson Shaun M. Ziegler, and brothers Clifton (the late Elaine) Woolf and Donald (the late Judy) Woolf. He was preceded in death by his parents Ghuyrane and Dorothy Woolf and sister Maggie (Harry Sr.) Bryan. Charlie was a dear brother-in-law, uncle, and friend to many.
