Robert Carr

In Loving Memory

Carr, Robert “Bob” R.

July 13, 1936 - July 18, 2024

Robert Ray Carr of Crestwood, passed away on July 18, 2024. He was 88 years old and will be remembered as loving husband, father, grandfather, brother uncle, great-uncle and friend.

Bob, as he was known to all who knew him, was born in July 13, 1936, in St. Louis, beloved son of the late Mona (Hunt) VanHook and the late Harvey L. Carr in St. Louis; beloved husband of 68 years to Ruth Ann (Hounsom) Carr and brother to Ronald Carr (Judy), Gale Braun (the late James) and the late William Carr.

Loving father of Gary Allen, the late Robert Steven, Donna Lynn Clayton (Samuel) and Martin Scott (Constance); adoring grandfather of Jeffrey (Erin) Clayton, Ryan Clayton of Seattle, WA., Daniel Clayton of Denver, CO., Robert (Caitlin) Carr, Clare (Kyle) Breda and Victoria Carr.

Bob graduated from Webster Groves High School and on December 26, 1955, he married the love of his life at Brentwood Congregational Church shortly before he deployed to Korea with the U.S. Army 304th Signal Battalion.

He had a passion for baseball and during his early years of marriage, Bob was a coach with Khoury League youth baseball and also played softball for the Church of the Open Door team in Webster Groves. He played the guitar and loved country/western and Bluegrass music. Bob and Ruth were both active for many years in the Brentwood Star Promenaders Square Dance Club where they made many lifetime friends. Bob was also an avid hunter and fisherman and was a member of St. Louis Skeet and Trap Club.

In 1998 he retired from St. Louis County Water Company after 39 years. Bob was very proud of his military service and in retirement he and Ruth were active organizers and attendees for Bob’s army unit reunions and represented his father at reunions of the CVE-57 U.S.S. Anzio/Coral Seas crew from World War II. In 2017 Bob was tapped to be a recipient of a veteran’s honor flight to Washington, D.C.

Bob was a familiar face during the Christmas season at The Salvation Army, volunteering for the “Toytown” toy drives over many years. In addition to volunteer involvement, retirement afforded Bob and Ruth the opportunity to travel. He had an affinity for desert and mountain landscapes which drew them to spend many winters in Rancho Mirage, California.

He was most proud of his grandchildren, never missing an opportunity to spend time with them, including many “Margarita Nights” as they got older. In his words, “My grandkids are my life.”

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Shriner’s Children’s Hospital, www.shrinerschildrens.org/en/locations/st-louis, Greater St. Louis Honor Flight,  gslhonorflight.org or a charity of your choice.

SERVICES: Visitation will be held at KUTIS AFFTON CHAPEL (10151 Gravois Rd., 63123) on Wednesday, July 24th from 9:00 – 11:00 AM, with the funeral service beginning at 11:00 AM. Interment at Oak Hill Cemetery.

  3. Bob will be greatly missed. He definitely lived an exemplary life. His love and loyalty to family, to friends and community, and to country is immeasurable. Bob lived his best life. Thank you for your friendship and for your service.

    Final Salute:
“In the hush of dawn, a trumpet plays,
For a hero’s journey, and end of days.
The flag draped casket, a nation’s tear,
For a soldier’s valor, we all hold dear.
With heads bowed low, we remember the time,
Of his laughter, his voice, his prime.
Though he rests now, in eternal sleep,
His legacy is one, we’ll forever keep.

As the last note fades, in the morning’s hue,
We offer our gratitude, our final salute.
For he gave his all, without any due,
A soldier, a hero, forever true.”

  8. I grew up on Apex as well and I was always welcomed into the Carr’s home as if I were a part of the family. What summers we had growing up in that neighborhood, we had it good back in the day. I am so sorry for your loss and Gary, I do wish I could make it to the service as I would have enjoyed seeing you again and catching up. Take care, Deanna

  11. We are sending condolences to Ruth and the family for Bob. We considered Bob a good friend, and he was so much a part of the 304 Signal Core group that it is probably a good thing they quit their yearly meetings ,because it would not be the same without Bob and Ruth. We feel so fortunate to have known him, and he and all of you are in our thoughts and prayers.
