I am deeply saddened to hear of Mike’s passing. My name is Winston Campbell, and I have had the privilege of knowing Mike since 1990. Our friendship began with a shared passion for Buick cars, particularly when he discovered I owned a Buick Grand National named “Shwdwn.” From that moment, we were inseparable.
Mike was more than just a friend; he was a mentor and a guiding light in my life. He welcomed me into his life with open arms, always allowing me to stop by the shop during the evenings and weekends. His encouragement and support, especially in my academic pursuits, meant the world to me.
I’ll forever cherish the moments we spent listening to his collection of 50’s and 60’s music in the shop, as well as our exhilarating racing adventures. Mike’s unwavering kindness, wisdom, and friendship have left an indelible mark on my heart.
My deepest condolences to Mike’s family during this difficult time. He was a remarkable friend who will be truly missed.
With heartfelt sympathy,
Winston Campbell
Gonna miss you Mike. Thank you for everything that you ever did for me when I was young and growing up. You sir were a one of a kind. When you get up there give dad a hug for me. Til I see you on the other side. Ricky
So sorry to hear about Mike, we lived on Telegraph just south of Sappington Barracks for 52 years. Mike was always a good guy, and a good mechanic. I remember when the Chevrolet dealer on Lemay Ferry could not determine what was wrong with a car, Mike could diagnose the problem.
I am Norm Miller’s oldest son.
Mike was a legend in the neighborhood. I will always remember him revving up his dragster in his garage by the Clark gas station on the weekends!
I’m sure there were complaints about how loud it was, though we never did. That was what you called ‘Being Cool’ in the 70’s and 80’s!
It was around 1983-85, my friend Todd B. and I would stop into the shop after hours to hang out with little mike. His dad was building a TWIN-TURBO, inter-cooled V-6 inside a Buick Grand National. We think it was for the GM Brass??. It was cool. We thought of Big Mike as a genius.
Oh, Pappy where do I begin? You have been there for my whole family for more than 20 years! You gave Ronnie a purpose, you were a mentor for my kids, you gave a home to my sisters puppy when needed, you loved my grand daughter as though she were your own.
My favorite memory is when you and Ronnie helped me change my oil and I ended up with engine oil all down the front side of my work outfit.
You truly were part of our family. I’ll always be grateful that you were in our lives and for all the holiday dinners we shared with you. I’m thankful I got to see you one last time last Wednesday and remind you that we all loved you. We still do.
Will miss you dearly, Mike. I know you’re reunited with your grandpa, Richard, Ronnie and Glanz! Rest in peace, Mike. You’ve earned it.
My condolences to the entire family. Mike was a wonderful dude and a great car guy. I found his old school mentality to be both amusing and extremely inspirational. He always took great care of me and helped most in any way he could. Thanks for being a friend.
Truly a sad day for the entire Buick community across the entire country.
Condolences to the family. Deeply saddened to hear of this news. Wishing I would have made that last effort to stop by and shoot the breeze with him. I feel fortunate that he came by my place a couple months ago and spent an evening here. Mike was an extremely talented and knowledgeable individual with a big heart. Through the years I stopped by his shop I saw him take care of so many people and their needs. I was truly inspired by Mike, his talents, his personality, his knowledge and know-how and his overall generosity. I will forever respect and appreciate the time I spent with Mike. I wish family the best in this very difficult time.
Mike I will miss our Monday morning chats. We were friends for over 50 years.
We had lots of good times thru the years.
Hope to see you on the other side.
Mike I would like to thank you for all that you did for Shari.
When she was in need for car repairs or just life, you was like the second father
to her. She would talk about all the times you was there for her. I first met
you in 2020. I remember bringing you barbecue pork steak from Pick-A-Bone.
Just a thank you for who you are.
We all will miss his help and intelligent mind. Many times I asked for advice or his opinion. Often he would reply to my question with another question, forcing me to figure it out myself. Couldn’t have done it myself.
Also and old saying….
HE WHO DIES WITH THE MOST TOYS WINS!!!
You win Mike….you win.
I grew up with Mike, Rich, and Dave. To many stories to tell. I moved to SoCal in the 80’s but would talk to him any time I came back to St. Louis. I remember Gramps giving us hell when he found out we all piled into the trunk of his Hudson to sneak into Southtwin. So long old friend.
RIP Mike….. We did his towing for many many years & Mike was always a great guy. He was longtime friends with my father Ron Chitwood. I remember sometimes going to lunch with Joe Spellman, Mark Kestler, Mike & Rich Christiansen & we wd go to Chinese smorgasbord over in SOCO & it was always alot of fun. We wd all laugh our a$$es off just goofing off & telling stories etc….. I remember him loving his Buick Gran National & that wicked dragster he had with the V6 & power glide trans. Mike was one of a kind super nice guy & funny too. That end of Sappington Barracks will never be the same old friend. 😢 . I remember Mike going back to b4 the shop they have now & he had a small white framed house type detached garage he started with & worked out of & we did their towing dating all the way back in the day. I sure hated to have heard of this as we lost a good one!!
Prayers to Mike & his family & closest friends!!
RIP Mike ❤️
I’m so deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my dear friend! I knew an loved Mike my whole life! He was one of a kind! He was a genius when it came to cars and everything mechanical! I admired him all my life! REST IN PEACE MY FRIEND!
Had a lot of good times with Mike and his brother over at the garage and with his grandpa many years ago. Stop by a lot of times since I moved back to St. Louis and he was always willing to sit down and talk and visit. I will miss going by G&M all the time And thinking about his being there for so long helping so many people out.
