Mary Kathleen Holden (née Tracy), beloved mother, sister, aunt, and friend to all who knew her, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2026, at the age of 69.
Born on February 1, 1957, to Ruth Emily (née Richards) and Thomas Glennon Tracy, Mary grew up surrounded by a large and loving family. She shared a close bond with her siblings Margaret “Peggy” Connor (Tim), Jean Shipley (Bill), and Thomas Tracy (Crystal), and was preceded in death by her beloved sisters Patricia “Pat” Benton and Ruth Ann Ferris.
Mary was a devoted and loving mother to her two sons, Michael Holden and his wife Carolyn, and Thomas Holden and his fiancée Melinda, all of whom brought her immeasurable pride and joy. She also shared many happy years with her longtime companion, Paul, whose presence brought friendship, laughter, and love into her life.
Mary had a lifelong love of flowers, quilting, crafting, crocheting, and learning new creative skills. She had a gift for making things beautiful and poured care and creativity into everything she touched. Many babies were welcomed into the world wrapped in blankets lovingly crocheted or handmade by Mary, treasured keepsakes that remain with families to this day. She was especially known for her incredible baking, and her cookies and cheesecakes were cherished by family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers alike.
A devoted animal lover, Mary adored her dogs throughout the years, including Frisco and Diesel-named in honor of her father’s work with the railroad- as well as Lady, Butch, Buck, Hunter, Jack, and many other beloved companions who brought her joy over the years.
Mary dedicated more than 30 years of her professional life to Schnucks, where her hard work, leadership, humor, and outgoing personality led her to become a highly respected Manager. She had a remarkable ability to make work enjoyable, always ready with a good story, a warm smile, or a perfectly timed joke. She was admired by coworkers and customers alike for her strength, kindness, and ability to lead with both confidence and compassion.
Mary was proud of her education and accomplishments. As one of six children, she was the only sibling to graduate from private school, something she carried with quiet pride throughout her life. In college, she even took karate classes – just one example of her adventurous spirit and willingness to try something new.
Proud of her Irish heritage, Mary carried a deep love for Ireland and its culture throughout her life. In 2009, she traveled to Ireland with Michael, Carolyn, and Thomas to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, a trip filled with memories she treasured dearly. She embraced her heritage with joy, warmth, humor, and a twinkle in her eye that those who loved her will never forget.
Mary was also a devoted St. Louis Blues fan. During hockey season, everyone knew not to interrupt a game with a phone call unless it was truly important. Cheering on the Blues brought her great joy, and watching the games became one of the many traditions her family lovingly associates with her.
Mary’s kindness, creativity, strength, and loving spirit touched countless lives. She will be remembered not only for her accomplishments, but for the comfort, laughter, generosity, and love she gave so freely to family, friends, coworkers, and all who knew her.
Mary is survived by her sons Michael and Thomas; her sisters Margaret “Peggy” Connor and Jean Shipley; her brother Thomas Tracy; her longtime companion Paul; and countless extended family members, dear friends, and beloved furry companions who will miss her deeply.
A celebration of Mary’s life will be held on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at Kutis Funeral Home in Affton. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with funeral services immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Mary’s honor to the American Cancer Society.
