April 27, 1942 – July 27, 2024
Larry was born April 27, 1942 in Belleville, Il, at Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital. He died peacefully at home under hospice care on July 27, 2024 after a seven years long illness with cancer. His hospice care was mercifully managed by an SSM Health at Home team.
Larry was raised in Columbia, IL. He graduated from Immaculate Conception Catholic Grade School, Columbia High School class of 1960, and Brown Business College.
Larry began a long career in trust operations at Boatmen’s Bank in August 1961. His business career was interrupted by Army service from Jul ’64 to Jul ’66. He returned to Boatmen’s rising in the ranks to Senior Vice President for Trust Operations. During his management tenure over trust operations the banking industry underwent a period of intense consolidations. Boatmen’s merged with St Louis bank, Centerre, as well with numerous other banks from neighboring states. The mergers of these banks’ trust operations into Boatmen’s trust operations were accomplished with Larry leading an outstanding support team of Russ Lipe, Barb Thompson, Cathy Chalupny, David Antishin, Bob McDermott, Chuck Barnowski, Roberta Butterly, Erv Juelfs and Tupper Drane. Boatmen’s Bancshares Inc. was one of the 30 largest bank holding companies in the United States when it was acquired by NationsBank in 1996. Larry retired from NationsBank on 1 March 1998 after 35 years in trust operations.
Throughout his 26 years in retirement Larry remained active, experiencing many treasured moments with cherished friends and family. Frequent Janson family gatherings were special occasions to share good food, good stories, good camaraderie. Larry enjoyed fishing and would drive to southern Missouri’s Wappapello Lake to fish for bass and crappie. Tending to his lawn and garden would occupy many hours each week. Traveling the world with loved ones was his passion. From Australia to the Mediterranean Larry visited 27 countries over 5 continents.
Larry was admired, respected, liked, loved by so many. His loss leaves an unimaginable emptiness, difficult to ever fill.
