In Loving Memory

Meyr, Dennis E.

July 31, 1946 - April 5, 2024

Asleep in Jesus on Friday, April 5th, 2024.

Dennis Meyr was born July 31, 1946 in New Wells, Missouri to Ruben and Gertrude (Schlimpert) Meyr. His family lived on a farm near Apple Creek. When Dennis was 5 years old, the family bought 3 farms around Chaffee, Missouri, southwest of Cape Girardeau, and moved there. In Chaffee once September came, Dennis entered 1st grade. The problem? His family spoke German within their home, and Dennis had never heard English. Needless to say, Dennis had a difficult adjustment in first grade, learning to speak, write, and understand English simultaneously.

He was one of seven children: Ryland, Doris, Larry, Dennis, Glen, Loretta, and Rex. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. After graduating from Chaffee High School, he attended Southeast Missouri, receiving a BS in Education and a MA in Industrial Technology. While in college, he played football and became a 4 year letterman. After college he married Sandy (Obergoenner) and became an industrial technology teacher, as well as a football and track coach in Malden, Missouri. While living here, Dennis and Sandy were blessed with 2 children: Sara and Eric. Then he and Sandy and the children moved to Poplar Bluff where he taught in high school and Junior high and coached football and then officiated sports until his retirement in 1999. After retirement he became the town handy man for friends and family. His hobbies included woodworking, hunting, fishing, and golfing.

In 2004 Dennis and Sandy moved to Concord Village in St. Louis County. They became members of the Lutheran Church of Webster Gardens. In 2014 Dennis was diagnosed with Inclusion Body Myositsis, which dramatically changed his life. He began to need a cane, then a walker, and finally a scooter and power wheel chair. He slowly became weaker and slower, and life became more and more difficult. He died April 5, 2024 at the age of 77. He is survived by his wife Sandy and children Sara and Eric. In addition, he is survived by one sister, Loretta of St. Charles, and 4 brothers: Ryland (Dutch) of Cape Girardeau, Larry and Glen of Chaffee, Rex of Jackson.

SERVICES: Funeral will be held at The Lutheran Church of Webster Gardens (8749 Watson Rd, Webster Groves, MO 63119) on Thursday, April 11th at 10:00 AM, with visitation prior from 9:00 – 10:00 AM. Interment at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation on Wednesday, April 10th at KUTIS AFFTON CHAPEL (10151 Gravois Rd, Affton, MO 63123) from 4:00 – 7:00 PM.

  2. Dennis & I attended church at St Paul’s Lutheran. We also competed against each other in Basketball as Kelly & Chaffee were in the same conference. I went to college at Rolla & remember Dennis playing football there when he was attending SEMO.

My sincerest condolences to the entire Meyr family!
