In Loving Memory

Moonier, Michael Ruben

September 23, 1953 - August 20, 2025

Michael “Mike” Ruben Moonier, fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church, entered into eternal life on August 20, 2025. He is survived by his wife, Sandy, whom he loved and adored for over 42 years; his children Jeremy (Tracy), Jon (Sarah), Carrie (Craig), Matthew (Clara Lee), Mitchell, and Natalia; his grandchildren Amber, Logan, Brooke, Ally, Lily, Paige, and Katie; and siblings Jo Ella and Kevin. He was preceded in death by his father, Francis, and mother, Juana (nee Mehner).

Michael was born in St. Louis and received his M.B.A. from Webster University. His lifelong ministry in healthcare began at Lutheran Hospital, then to Alexian Brothers (where he and Sandy met). He then spent over 40 years at Mercy Health before his retirement in 2021. As the Executive Director of Regulatory and Accreditation Compliance, he oversaw the safety standards of 34 hospitals and outpatient centers across four states. His wit and joy for life was felt by every co-worker he encountered from housekeepers to neurosurgeons.

Michael’s passion for the outdoors was shared with his loved ones through fishing, camping, bird-watching (and feeding), and riding his bike on Missouri trails. Always the adventurer, he loved piloting small planes and going on road trips with his family. He took every opportunity to be involved with his church and his children as School Board President at Holy Child, Parish Council Member and Eucharistic Adoration Guardian at Immaculate Conception, and Boy Scout Leader. He was his children’s biggest fan at band concerts, hockey games, and musicals. He will always be remembered for his willingness to share his knowledge, whether it involved car repairs, building a dollhouse, or giving invaluable life advice.

Whether his loved ones were close by or on the other side of the world, no distance was too far to feel his love and wisdom, or experience his humor. Our faith assures us that will not change.

Services: Visitation at Kutis South County, 5255 Lemay Ferry Rd., Tuesday, August 26, 3:00pm-9:00pm. Funeral at St. Joseph Catholic Church (Imperial) for 10:00am Mass. Interment at Shepherd Hills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Michael’s name to either Wings of Hope or Brain Tumor Network, as he always wanted to give back to those who helped him along his journey.

  2. I worked with Mike for more than twenty years at Mercy before my retirement at the end of 2019. He was smart, affable, and wise. He was dedicated to Sandy, his family, his church and Mercy. I will be away for his mass and visitation or I would surely attend both. Great treasures await Mike beyond the vail where he will certainly be reunited with a host of family and friends. God bless Mike Moonier!

  3. As someone fairly new to the regulatory world several years ago, Mike was a source of knowledge and guidance that gave me great support and confidence. When I finally met him in person a few years later, I saw a peer, a friend, a compassionate and understanding man whose only goal was to help people. Even though I knew him very little, his presence was big and he is and will be missed.

  7. I knew “of” Mike before I actually met him as his well-deserved professional reputation preceded him. His extensive knowledge of regulatory content with innate ability to interpret it within the bounds of operational reality was exceptional. When Mike was “on scene” with surveyors, his confidence helped everyone else feel more comfortable. In 2011, I was granted the opportunity to become a closer colleague of Mike’s when I joined the Quality Department at Mercy St. Louis. His quick wit, matched only by his bottomless amount of “useful” information was a humorous blessing to everyone he encountered. A truly remarkable man who will be missed. Thank you to you, his family, for sharing him with the rest of us. May your cherished memories of him, bring you peace. He made a heartwarming mark on so many of our hearts!

  9. I worked with Mike at Mercy Jefferson in the quality department. He was always so good to his staff and taught me so very much along the way, from the quality world to surveys and the homemade cookies he always brought us at Christmas time! Even the after work events we had with him- I learned what a good soul he had❤️. He surely will be missed and my prayers go out to his family in this time of grief. But God is good and you will get to be with him again one day!
