In Loving Memory

Newhouse S.L.M.P.D., Sgt. Gregory W. “Greg”

Gregory William Newhouse was Fortified with the Sacraments of Holy Mother Church Saturday, May 6, just four days after his 54th birthday.  Greg was a loving and devoted husband for nearly 29 years to his wife, Cathy.  Together they are the proud parents of Joshua and Caitlyn.

Greg’s family was always his first priority.  He always put Cathy, Josh, and Cait first, above all other people and things.  He was extremely proud of his children and excited for their futures.

Greg joined the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department as a recruit in October, 1991.  He acquired the rank of Sergeant and at the time of his death he was assigned to the Third District.  Greg was proud to serve the City of St. Louis for over 31 years.

In Greg’s free time he enjoyed spending quiet evenings with his family on the patio or deck. He also enjoyed time at his family’s farm in Warrenton, whether it be fishing, cutting grass, or just appreciating the peacefulness on the screened in porch.  He loved being on the water: on a ski boat, a pontoon boat, or a fishing boat.  His favorite vacation destination was the beach where he could always be found under an umbrella with a book in his hand.   He loved fishing and passed that love on to his son, Josh.  Greg had a wicked, sarcastic sense of humor, and he passed that on to his daughter, Cait.

Greg courageously battled cancer for close to seven years.  He never gave up and continued to fight so he could be there for his wife and kids.  Unfortunately, his body just could not fight any longer.  Cathy, Josh, and Cait are so proud of Greg and thankful for all that he went through for them.  They would also like to thank the doctors and nurses at Mercy Hospital for aiding him in his fight.

In addition to his wife and children, Greg is survived by his loving mother, Verneal Minderman; sister, Natalie (Don) Hake; brother, Bill (Beth) Newhouse; father-in-law, Raymond Lauer; mother-in-law, Beverly Lauer, brothers-in-law Mike (Chris),  Paul (Julie), and Matt (Tracy) Lauer.  Our dearest uncle, great-uncle, cousin, and friend to many.  Greg was preceded in death by his father, William, his sister Gail, and his grandparents.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Backstoppers.

Services: Memorial Visitation at Kutis Affton Chapel, 10151 Gravois Rd., on Wednesday, May 10, from 4-8 p.m. Memorial Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows (Kingshighway and Rhodes) Thursday, May 11, at 10 a.m. Inurnment at Resurrection Cemetery.

  13. Sgt. Newhouse was an absolute delight to work for. He was professional, could be counted on to accomplish any task, and managed to lead through kindness and by example… traits not all leaders share. To say he will be missed is an understatement. His family is my family’s thoughts, heart, and prayers. Rest easy sir, we got it from here. Thanks for everything!
