Schmidt, Donald Duane

January 4, 1939 - November 10, 2023

Donald Duane Schmidt, age 84, passed away peacefully on November 10th, 2023, with his loving family by his side. Don is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Joan (McEvoy) Schmidt, son Stephen (Carmen) Schmidt, St. Louis, MO, and daughter Cynthia (Brad Tafoya) Schmidt, Durango, CO. Dear Grandfather of Helena, Elijah, Noah, Joshua, John Paul, Benjamin, Seraphina, Isaiah, and Mark Schmidt. Brother of Mel (Linda) Schmidt of Bismarck ND, brother-in-law of Val (Marge) Frank of Bismarck, ND, and brother-in-law of Margaret McEvoy of St. Louis, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mike and Margaret (Boesphlug) Schmidt, brothers Virgil, and James and sister, Vernice Frank, sister-in-law Marjorie Schmidt, great-niece Trinity Sweet, parents-in-law Edward J. Sr. and Helen (Quirk) McEvoy, and brother-in-law Edward J. McEvoy, Jr. Dear uncle, cousin, and friend to many.

Don was born in Burt, ND, on January 4, 1939, and raised on the family farm northeast of Mott, ND. Don graduated from the University of North Dakota and came to St. Louis to work at NGA (National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency) for 41 years. He served in the Air Force Reserves and was a 4th Degree and Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Webster Groves Council #2119.

Don, Joan, and their children spent many happy summers visiting the Schmidt family and farm in North Dakota. Don loved to ride his bicycle all over the area where he lived, golfing, getting together with their many friends, and most of all spending time with his family.

Don generously donated his body to Saint Louis University’s School of Medicine to train future physicians, occupational and physical therapists, athletic trainers, physician assistants, and educators.

SERVICES:  Memorial Mass at St. Catherine Laboure Catholic Church, 9740 Sappington Road on Saturday, December 2nd at 10 a.m. Celebration of Life to follow at the Hearth Room, Historic Hawken House in Webster Groves. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Charity of your choice are appreciated.

I will always remember Don for his love and devotion to Joan, Steve, Carman, Cindy and Bradley and all of his precious grandchildren. Don was a dear friend to me and I will always remember his kindness. I pray you find joy and peace in the many fond memories you shared. We will miss you Don but you will never be forgotten! .
