Susi, Gabrielle Ann “Gaye” (nee Matuska)

December 20, 1946 - August 12, 2024

Died on August 12, 2024 at The deGreeff Hospice House with her family at her side. Gaye was born on December 20, 1946 in Philadelphia to Stephen and Mildred Matuska. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter Stephanie.

As a child, Gaye was an accomplished ballerina. She became the youngest professional member of the Corps de Ballet with the Philadelphia Opera Company. She met her husband, John, in Independence Square during the first Earth Day Celebration in 1970. A year later they were married, and spent the next 15 years living in Pittsburgh where their two daughters, Stephanie Colleen and Patricia Kathleen were born. In 1985, they moved to the St. Louis area. Gaye was active in church and volunteer affairs. She worked for years for Corva Corporation.

Gaye is survived by her husband of 53 years, John; daughter Patricia (Todd Hovermale) Susi; grandsons Charles “CJ” and Caleb Kuhter; granddaughter Grace Walkenbach; her bonus grandchildren Scarlett, Georgia, India and John and her loving cat Twyla.

The family thanks the nurses and staff of Mercy South Hospital and the caregivers at The deGreeff Hospice House for their loving and compassionate care.

Visitation at Kutis Affton Chapel 10151 Gravois Rd. 63123 on Sunday, August 18 from 4-8 pm. with Funeral Services on Monday, August 19 at 10:00 am. Interment at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The deGreeff Hospice or to a charity of your choice.

  1. Having known Gaye only through her incredible, kind daughter Tricia I can only imagine what a wonderful soul, mother, wife and grandmother she was.

  2. Mrs. Susi was an very inspirational and caring mentor in my young life. As a neighbor and role model, she provided so much love and support during my formidable years. I carry so many wonderful memories of time spent with the entire Susi family. My deepest condolences to Mr. Susi, Trishia, and your entire family. With much love, Chris Hasley (Barnard)
