Phyllis Ann Wofford beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, and friend to many was carried gently into Jesus’ arms on April 13, 2024.
Phyllis was born on December 19, 1933, in Alton, Illinois to Charles and Elizabeth Horn. She married Theodore Wofford and their journey together through life would last for nearly seventy years.
Phyllis graduated from Washington University with a degree in teaching, but her passion and her career was singing. Her great love was church music, in whose power to inspire she devoutly believed, and to which she dedicated her life and talents. Phyllis sang professionally at several churches including Centenary Methodist, St. Michael and St. George Episcopal, St. Peter’s Episcopal, United Hebrew, and she even sang on television on The Protestant Hour.
In addition to singing and raising her family, she also loved to travel, and had many wonderful adventures. She rode a camel on the Giza Plateau and climbed inside the Great Pyramid, sloshed through a cave in Spain to see 25,000 year old cave paintings, and passionately loved all things Italian.
Phyllis loved Jesus and tried to live her life in His image. She always put others above herself and made it her life’s work to help others be it family, friends, or strangers. She volunteered at hospitals, worked with organizations such Meals on Wheels, and made herself available whenever someone was in need.
Phyllis is survived by her husband Ted, her five children Kathleen, Michael, Steven, Ellen and Jonathan, 16 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
SERVICES: Funeral Mass at the Shrine of St. Joseph (1220 N 11th St. 63106) on Thursday April 18, at 11:00am, with Visitation from 10:00 – 11:00am. Burial to follow at Jefferson Barracks.
It was an honor to know Phyllis and have her freindship.
She was one of the truest believers I have crossed paths with.
Sincere condolences to Ted and they’re children.
Dear Ted,
We just saw an Obituary for Ed Sonnenschein who died in October, and in searching saw that your dear Phyllis has died. We are thinking of you and feeling grateful that we knew Phyllis and the dear friend that she was with that beautiful voice. Our thoughts and prayers plus many many memories are with you. We would love to hear from you.
Lovingly,
